Trump and Putin

MSNBC's Rachel Maddow aired a segment Tuesday night in which she claimed the White House misleadingly edited the official US government transcript and video of President Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin's press conference in Helsinki, Finland.

National Security Advisor John Bolton said in a statement Wednesday that a proposed meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin won't be until 2019 after the "Russia witch hunt is over".

Trump has taken umbrage with the investigation into Russian Federation meddling in the 2016 presidential election, led by the FBI and special counsel Robert Mueller.

Putin's top foreign policy aide Yury Ushakov said that several days after the Helsinki meeting the Kremlin received a United States proposal to organise a new summit in Washington "at the end of the year".

The White House has been trying to organize another meeting between Trump and Putin, but the idea has sparked widespread outrage and consternation among anxious Democrats and Congressional Republicans like McConnell who remain at odds with the administration over mending relations with Moscow.

The announcement of the invitation from Trump to Putin after the extensive closed-door meeting the two had in Helsinki, Finland, was not received well by many in the Capitol.

Meanwhile, secretary of state Mike Pompeo threatened Russian Federation with "severe consequences" for interfering in the USA election, adopting a tougher stance than Trump. He tweeted before the summit that, "Our relationship with Russian Federation has NEVER been worse thanks to many years of USA foolishness and stupidity".

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo appeared before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee on Wednesday afternoon to answer questions about what Trump and Putin discussed in their two-hour private meeting.

One unanswered question on Wednesday was whether Bolton's statement effectively amounted to a policy that means Putin can not come to the United States so long as Mueller's work continues.

"There's lots of work to do to figure out how to implement that, but the United States certainly wants to be part of help achieving that resolution in Syria, make no mistake about it", he added.

Putin has slammed the US opposition to Trump as "pathetic, worthless people" who are willing to sacrifice Russian-US ties for their own ambitions.

The Kremlin said this week that although Washington and Moscow agreed there was a need for another Putin-Trump meeting, Russian Federation had not yet begun any practical preparations for a new meeting.

The Kremlin aide declined to answer some questions concerning the Helsinki summit, including the question as to how persistent Trump was in raising the issue of Russia's alleged interference in the 2016 U.S. presidential election.

'I have President Putin.

Putin last visited the U.S. in 2015 for a session of the United Nations General Assembly in NY and a meeting with former USA president Barack Obama. "We did not edit the question out".

And Trump is still facing calls to reveal what was said between the two men in their private, one-on-one meeting for nearly two hours in Helsinki.
