Russians flood the streets to celebrate historic World Cup win over Spain

Iniesta retires from international football

Spain legend Andres Iniesta confirmed his retirement from global football following his nation's round-of-16 elimination to Russian Federation.

The 34-year-old, who scored the winning goal at the 2010 World Cup final, won 133 caps in an global career spanning 12 years, during which he also won European championship titles in 2008 and 2012.

The 34-year-old dropped to the bench for the last-16 clash, having started all of Spain's three group games, but was introduced on 67 minutes for his 131st worldwide cap. A marvellous spell is over.

"It's bad, it's tough", he said.

Iniesta started Sunday's last-16 game on the bench as coach Fernando Hierro opted to rest the Barcelona legend.

"In the second half, we were trying to defend".

And the hosts punished Spain as Artyom Dzyuba converted from the penalty spot.

'On a personal level, it wasn't my dream farewell, but these things happen in life'.

He was unable to inspire Spain to victory however as they were beaten 4-3 on penalties by the World Cup hosts.

Former England player Chris Waddle said on 5Live: "This is the World Cup of set-pieces".

There have been 48 Spanish players who have scored on the biggest stage for the national team and it's David Villa who has found the net the most with his tally of nine goals from 2006 to 2014.

From 1950 to 1978 there was something of a goal drought for Spain at the biggest worldwide tournament with only two coming in 1962 in Chile and four in England's tournament held in 1966.
