Serena Williams set to ‘be a contender to win Grand Slams’

GETTY Meghan Markle and Serena Williams have been friends for nearly a decade

It's an important distinction given what happened in Saturday's Wimbledon final.

She was bidding to become only the fourth mum to win a Grand Slam title in the professional era and the first at Wimbledon since Evonne Goolagong beat Chris Evert in 1980.

He was then knocked out of the Australian Open in the last 16 in January by Hyeon Chung, then ranked at 58. After all, it was only 10 months ago that she needed an emergency C-section while giving birth to her daughter, Alexis Olympia, and she also suffered blood clots and other serious complications afterwards.

Making a mockery of Wimbledon's decision to seed her a lowly 25th, Williams has powered through the draw, getting stronger with each match. "Now she's supporting me in a different role, but our friendship is still exactly the same", she said.

"It's obviously disappointing but I can't be disappointed", Williams said.

The 2016 Australian Open champion got off to a brilliant start, immediately breaking her well-decorated USA opponent to take a 2-0 lead at the beginning of the match. "She played out of her mind".

She credited training with Graf in Las Vegas, where Graf lives with husband Andre Agassi, with helping her turn things around.

While today marks her first appearance in the royal box at Wimbledon, this isn't the first time Meghan has gone to the tournament. We just wanted her to survive-ten months later, she is in the #Wimbledon final.

Kerber started playing tennis when she was three but she was far from an overnight prodigy.

"I'm just me and that's all that I can be". You could see it in her body language, she really settled in.

Kerber stamped her authority on the match from the very start, exploiting her opponent's backhand errors to break serve.

Williams has the head-to-head record over Kerber at 6-2. "The fear that I might not come back as strong as I was, the fear that I can't be both the best mother and the best tennis player in the world". "Every year for a couple years she comes out to Wimbledon and has supported me".

Germany´s Angelique Kerber poses with the winner´s trophy, the Venus Rosewater Dish, after her women´s singles final victory over United States player Serena Williams on the twelfth day of the 2018 Wimbledon Championships.

Williams' play was tight right from the outset.

After taking the opening two points, Wiliiams made four miscues in a row to get broken. It would be her last tournament for more than a year, in part because of a series of medical procedures that followed a hard childbirth. The two-time champion gave up a 3-0 lead before breaking Djokovic again to take the fourth set 6-3.

And social media users did their utmost to praise Williams for her courage on and off the court.

That's not to say Kerber is only about defending. Honestly, I feel like if I can do it, they can do it.

The men's semi-final will resume at 1pm on centre court, after which, the ladies' final will begin.
