Series of deadly IS attacks kill 150 in Syria

Syrian army advances in southwest against IS militants

"Hizbullah denounces this ugly crime", said the statement, "it comes in the wake of the impressive victories achieved by Syria and its allies recently especially in the Syrian south".

Where did these attacks take place?

A suicide bomber detonated his explosives at a busy vegetable market in the city of Sweida, some 120km south from the capital Damascus, early on Wednesday, as ISIL fighters mounted attacks on several villages to the northeast, state news agency SANA said.

There had been no support from Syrian pro-government forces, she said. The Observatory said at least 56 militants were killed.

An activist-operated Facebook page called Sweida News Network said numerous killed were shot in the head.

Citing the Syrian regime's state media agency, NPR's Ruth Sherlock reports, "The news report says a motorcycle bomber struck the marketplace just after dawn".

"They kidnapped more than 40 people, all of them women or children", said Bou Ammar.

The head of the Sweida provincial health authority told the pro-Damascus Sham FM 75 Islamic State fighters had also been killed.

Syrian army advances in southwest against IS militants

Omar said among the dead were civilians who picked up weapons to defend their hometowns against the IS assault on Thursday.

The attack by the IS came as Syrian government forces backed by Russian airpower continued their month-long military offensive to recover territory in southwest Syria bordering Jordan and the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights. The SNN said the militants sneaked into the villages under the cover of darkness, shooting residents as they slept.

Israel shot down a Syrian fighter jet it said had breached its airspace on Tuesday, as Syrian forces reached the Golan Heights frontier for the first time in seven years. The Observatory also reported a series of suicide blasts and the clashes in the province's countryside.

The Islamic State lost most of its territory previous year after rival offensives by the army, backed by Russian Federation, and an alliance of US-backed Kurdish and Arab militias swept through eastern Syria.

For the southern offensive, government forces redeployed troops from Sweida province last month to attack rebels and IS-affiliated militants in the nearby provinces of Daraa and Quneitra.

More than 350,000 people have been killed and millions displaced since Syria's war started in 2011.

The Islamic State group posted no death toll for its own men in Wednesday's fighting.
