Sheriff: 4 missing from boat are presumed dead

Several people are dead after a tourist boat overturned and sank in a lake near Branson Missouri during a thunderstorm

Among the passengers was an 11-member family, nine of whom died, according to Gov. Mike Parson's office.

In 2015, five students were killed and dozens of others injured when a duck boat struck a bus in Seattle.

Jim Pattison Jr., president of the Ride the Ducks Branson's parent company, told CNN that the 68 miles per hour gusts of wind and major waves "came out of nowhere".

Emergency crews were called to the incident shortly after 7:00pm (12:00am Friday BST) on Thursday.

The sheriff said life jackets were on board the boat but it's unclear if anyone was wearing them. "A storm came in as we got on and there was 2 ducks that you ride out there and 1 went under", she posted Thursday night on Facebook along with video of the boats bobbing up and down.

He implied authorities did not expect to find those four missing people alive, saying authorities were in "recovery mode for the bodies were still missing".

"Ride the Ducks" is a tourist attraction association with Branson in Taney County, but the incident happened on the lake in Stone County. One counselor took a survivor with wet socks to the bathroom to help him dry them out, she said.

BRANSON, Mo. (AP) - Dive teams are expected to resume the search for five people missing after a tourist boat capsized and sank in a southwestern Missouri lake. He has asked for all Missourian's thoughts and prayers for everyone who was involved in this tragedy. "Since the incident occurred, the Administration has been in contact with Governor Parson and other State and local officials, and the President will continue to monitor and receive regular updates on the situation", the statement added.

The National Transportation Safety Board was sending investigators to the scene on Friday, the agency said on Twitter.

Passengers on a nearby boat described the chaos on the lake as the winds picked up and the water turned rough.

"Debris was flying everywhere", Allison Lester said in an interview Friday with ABC's "Good Morning America".

A spokeswoman for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers says the agency has no authority to keep people or boats off of its lakes, even when bad weather approaches.

Seven people were being treated at a hospital, one of them with severe but non-life-threatening injuries, he added.

Steve Lindenberg, a meteorologist in Springfield, Missouri some 45 miles (72 kilometers) north of Branson, told AFP a string of severe thunderstorms had barreled through the area causing significant tree damage and downed power lines.

Jennie Carr witnessed the last moments of the tourist duck boat while on a lake cruise aboard the Showboat Branson Belle.

President Donald Trump tweeted about the accident Friday morning.

Suzanne Smagala with Ripley Entertainment, which owns Ride the Ducks in Branson, said the company was assisting authorities.

"We do not allow our DUCKs to go into the Charles River if there is lightning in the area or if conditions are forecasted to exceed our operating parameters set by the US Coast Guard", the company said.
