Six dead in Montreal as heat wave grips eastern Canada

Extreme heat warnings have been issued across southwestern Ontario

Dr. Robert Strang, chief medical officer of health, says the former criteria included higher temperatures like when the humidex was 40 degrees Celsius of higher. The causes of the deaths remain to be confirmed by a coroner.

"This setup will allow cooler and less humid air to flow from central Canada and into the Northeast and much of the Midwest", according to the report. The person had complained of the heat and breathing difficulties and died after paramedics had arrived.

Premier Philippe Couillard praised the work of public health officials.

Heat warnings were also in place for New Brunswick, P.E.I and Nova Scotia, where similarly intense conditions could push the humidex close to 40 on Thursday.

The passage of a cold front along with a 30 per cent chance of rain on Friday is expected to help temper the heat, leading to more seasonable summer weather the following weekend.

The heat wave, which started last Friday, is the worst to hit the province in decades, Canada's CBC reports.

"We go out to the paramedics, we go out to the hospitals and we ask them to make sure to identify any deaths they believe are related to heat and that allows us to intervene more quickly", Kaiser said. "It's not as normal that we see this length of a heat wave".

He said the Montreal heat exposure victims were between 50 and 80. The last one was in 2011 at eight days.

Besides the heat and humidity, Environment Canada is also calling for "very high" UV levels which means a higher risk of sunburn. The highest July 1 temperature recorded in Ottawa between 1939 and 2011 was 36.9 C in 1963. "And also do not forget to make sure you don't leave any people or pets in your vehicle, as temperatures will rise dramatically within minutes".
