Tour de France 2018 win confirmed ahead of final stage

Specttaors cheer as Great Britain's Geraint Thomas, wearing the overall leader's yellow jersey (Rear C), rides during the 20th stage of the 105th edition of the Tour de France cycling race, a 31-kilometer individual time-trial between Saint-Pee-sur-Nivelle and Espelette, southwestern France, on July 28, 2018.

Roglic powered down the final descent from the Col d'Aubisque to beat Thomas by 19 seconds and leapfrog Froome, whose star continued to fade, into third place overall.

His victory will also deliver a sixth Tour de France crown from the past seven events for Team Sky following Sir Bradley Wiggins in 2012 and Froome in 2013, 2015, 2016 and 2017.

"Big respect to Froomey", he said.

"If people don't agree with you, just shut it out and get on with it".

"The dream was always to participate, and that dream came true 11 years ago".

It mattered little, though, as Thomas maintained his lead to end Dumoulin's hopes of wrestling the yellow jersey from the 32-year-old.

Thomas, known for having a beer while watching his favourite sport of rugby, was quick to grab a Welsh flag before he jumped on to the top step of the podium before listening to a rendition of God Save the Queen - the British national anthem.

They focused on bike racing, making no mistakes and being well protected by the strongest team in the field.

"The strongest guy has won this Tour de France", Froome said. "I'm really sick of it, it doesn't make sense".

With a 1min 51sec advantage over Dumoulin, and teammate Chris Froome set to finish on the third step of the podium, Thomas will be celebrated as the first Welsh victor of the Tour, and the man who has made it six wins from the past seven editions for a rampant Team Sky.

Following Thomas' convincing display in the final mountain stage Friday, the Team Sky rider knew that he just had to finish within 2:04 of Dumoulin to secure the overall win.

It took several laps of the inner-city circuit around the Champs-Elysees for the race to kick into action. Late Scare " I just want to enjoy this, man.

European champion Kristoff of UAE Team Emirates edged out Trek-Segafredo's John Degenkolb, with Frenchman Arnaud Demare of Groupama-FDJ third.

"It's a dream come true", said Kristoff.

He told Sky Sports News: "I think it's been the most emotional of all our victories.this is a different story altogether".

Thomas rolled over the line seconds later, smiling and joking with teammate, training partner and close friend Froome. A crash on stage 17 sapped Sagan of his traditional fast kick for the final two sprints. Winning the first stage was a real boost but it's insane how everything just clicked on the Tour. "The race is over, but it's not sinking in".

Cardiff City Hall is being bathed in the colour of the yellow jersey, and castles across the country and the Welsh Government offices are also being turned yellow. But his teammate Pierre Latour boosted their campaign by winning the white jersey for the best-placed rider aged under 25.
