Uber driver secretly filmed over 700 passengers

Uber driver fired for secretly filming female passengers and having internet ‘rate’ them

Gargac told the Dispatch that he was just capturing "natural interactions between myself and the passengers - what a Lyft and Uber ride actually is". From children, to public figures, to your average slightly-tipsy adult - no rider appeared to have been spared the disturbingly exhibitionist treatment, which included what seems to be high quality video and audio. Uber did not immediately respond to questions about the suspension, including whether the ride-hailing company has policies for livestreaming passengers.

Almost all of the driver's 700 rides in the St. Louis area were recorded online, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. He tweeted that "transparency is always key" and has removed the videos from his Twitch channel as "step #1 of trying to calm everyone down".

CNET reached out to Uber and Lyft for comment but did not receive an immediate reply.

An Uber spokeswomen told CNET: "the troubling behaviour in the videos is not in line with our community guidelines. We have ended our partnership with this driver".

Gargac gave an interview to the St. Louis newspaper, in which he said the cameras were there for his own security.

Twitch did not comment to the newspaper on the case. His Twitch channel is no longer hosting any videos and has been suspended. However, Gargac told the Post-Dispatch that one of the key differences in his streams compared to those already on the service is that he didn't ask his passengers for permission, believing it resulted in a "fake" experience. People were sometimes named in the videos, the Post-Dispatch said, while homes were also shown.

According to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Jason Gargac of Florissant, Missouri had streamed over 700 rides since March.

Footage from a Jason Gargac livestream.

"I think from the outrage that this case is generating you can see that the average person does not expect to be filmed and live-streamed to the world while they're in the back of a cab", she said.

That's because Missouri is what's called a "one-party consent" state, which only requires that one participant in a conversation be aware a recording is happening for it to be legal.

Gargac said telling customers about the filming produced contrived results. He added: "I love doing it".
