UK Foreign Secretary Really Just Called His Chinese Wife 'Japanese'

Jeremy Hunt and his wife Lucia attend a garden party at Buckingham Palace

Realising his error, Hunt quickly corrected himself.

"We also of course discussed our trading relationship, and I think the best way to continue to grow our trade and strength and trust between Britain and China is to be able to have the kind of open and frank discussions we had this morning".

Mr Hunt is married to Lucia Guo and the couple have three children.

Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi and British Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt co-chair the Ninth China-UK Strategic Dialogue in Beijing, capital of China, July 30, 2018. Although relations have improved somewhat recently, they remain touchy due to issues such as Japan's bloody occupation of parts of China in the 1930s and 1940s. "Sorry, that's a bad mistake to make".

Hunt attempted to minimize the damage by demonstrating knowledge about where his wife's family lives.

However, he was quick to realise his mistake as he immediately added, "Sorry, that's a bad mistake to make".

Mr Hunt was using visit to show Britain's commitment to deepening ties post-Brexit between the nations.

"That's something that we welcome and we said that we will explore", he said, without elaborating. He said Mr. Wang had made an offer "to open discussions about a possible free trade deal done between Britain and China post Brexit".

Hunt's predecessor Boris Johnson quit earlier this month in protest at the government's plan to maintain a close trading relationship with the European Union after Brexit, a strategy that Johnson said would make it much more hard to do free-trade deals.

China's foreign minister said Monday that his country remains committed to the "one country, two systems" governing framework in Hong Kong, despite growing concerns that Beijing is eroding the former British colony's civil liberties.
