Wimbledon 2018: Unstoppable Roger Federer wins set in 16 minutes

Roger Federer

Wimbledon and the International Cricket Council on Monday indulged in some light-hearted banter over the quality of Roger Federer's forward defence.

Roger Federer, meanwhile, comfortably defeated Adrian Mannarino in a 6-0, 7-5, 6-4 victory to reach the quarterfinal stage.

For all those punters convinced of a Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal final on Sunday, it is worth recalling a cautionary tale from a decade ago.

Mannarino won only two points in the first five games and the opening set was brought to an end inside just 16 minutes.

The eighth-seeded Anderson will meet defending champion Federer in the next round.

"You always tend to play better against better players and I am happy to be back in the second week of Wimbledon".

"But, sure, I was also surprised it was that fast, that first set, especially 16 minutes".

One more straight-sets win would have Federer eclipsing his previous longest streak at the All England Club, when he won 34 sets in a row between the third round in 2005 and the 2006 final. "I didn't play on grass for a whole year", Nadal said.

"At the same time, I have been in that position a couple of times in my career". Anderson is the first South African man in the Wimbledon last-eight since Wayne Ferreira in 1994.

Anderson added that Federer, who won his first Wimbledon title in 2003, is the ideal role model for the sport - and for those players in the chasing pack.

It would also give him a last-8 clash against Juan Martin del Potro, the 5th seeded Argentine, or unseeded Gilles Simon of France.

He edged Gael Monfils 7-6 (4), 7-6 (2), 5-7, 7-6 (4), to whom he held a 0-5 head-to-head record entering the match.

Meanwhile, Federer will start at 1pm on Court 1 and will face the victor of Raonic and Isner in the semi-finals. The prestigious Centre Court at the All England Club became witness to the iconic moment and Twitter went insane over the clip. (In) 2014, I played a good tournament.

The top-ranked Nadal bludgeoned 37 winners to take down unseeded Czech Jiri Vesely 6-3 6-3 6-4 and reach the last eight for the first time in seven years.

The Swiss great has played every match on Centre Court since then, losing in the semifinals in 2016 and winning a record eighth title a year ago.

He is also the first Japanese man to reach the quarter-finals since Shuzo Matsuoka in 1995.

When they came back out on Tuesday, Del Potro completed a 7-6 (7-1) 7-6 (7-5) 5-7 7-6 (7-5) victory on Court Two, but only after sealing the win with his fifth match point. He then had to play on the Tuesday and was forced to quit in the second set of his quarter-final against Tomas Berdych on the Wednesday when his chronically sore serving elbow flared up.
