Android P is called ‘Pie’ and is now available for Pixel smartphones

Google Pixel 3, Pixel 3 XL Launch Reportedly Set for October 4

Out of nowhere, Google just announced that the latest version of Android, Android P, is officially called Android 9 Pie. And Android Pie isn't a huge upgrade like Oreo was, so it's not as exciting, either.

The factory image will wipe your device so when you reboot you will be on a fresh, brand new install of Android 9.0 Pie, while the OTA will simply update your current system to the latest stable version of Android.

If you're going to perform the update, you'll want to set aside some time, as it does take quite a while to download the 1047.2MB software update. These features include Digital Wellbeing (which gives you a centralized location to monitor your smartphone usage to help combat smartphone addiction) and Slices (which allows you to access portions of an app outside the "full screen" experience).

Android Pie, which was simply known as P, includes a whole host of new AI-powered features that are created to make your phone smarter, and simplify the experience of using it. "But these features are available in beta now for Pixel phones running Android 9", wrote Samat.

Google has developed a new battery manager with AI technology. I suspect it will start as an exclusive on the Pixel 3 and 3 XL. The source can not verify that Google shared the aforementioned date, in other words, created the ad in question, but it's highly likely that the two phones will drop on October 4.

Google has also baked several AI features into Android Pie.

Apart from coming on many - but not most - existing Android phones, the Android 9 Pie will also be the operating system inside the Google Pixel 3 and the Google Pixel 3 XL that are likely to launch on October 4 this year as the official Android phones of 2018. If not, be sure to read the instructions on Google's website very closely before you attempt it. There's a new Do Not Disturb and a feature called Wind Down that'll combine Night Light and Do Not Disturb and also fade your screen to grayscale, all to help you get to sleep at night. The digital wellness features are all still in beta, and won't be included when you get the update. To get to the phone's app drawer, you'll need to swipe up twice from the home button.
