Australian’s Parliament speech on ‘final solution’ condemned

Nazi phrase ‘final solution’ used by Katter MP Fraser Anning in ‘racist’ speech

Fraser Anning floated what the New York Times calls the "Nazi euphemism for genocide" on Tuesday during his first speech to Parliament, during which he called for a halt to Muslim immigration.

In that speech he used the phrase "final solution", which was the phrase used by the Nazis under Adolf Hitler which meant annihilating Jewish people from Europe.

"The final solution to the immigration problem is of course a popular vote", he said.

It has been strongly criticised by politicians from across the divide in both chambers, with Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull describing the "final solution" comment as a "shocking insult" to those who died in the Holocaust.

In her speech in the NSW parliament, Faruqi recalled enduring racist and sexist trolling during her tenure as MP "not because of what I'm doing but because of who I am, where I come from, and the colour of my skin".

A spokeswoman for Finance Minister Mathias Cormann, who shook Senator Anning's hand after the speech, said he was only following protocol. "It was a magnificent speech, solid gold", he said.

As for the "final solution" reference: "Fraser is a knockabout bloke, he's owned pubs and he's not stupid - he built his own aeroplane. I just want to know when it's going to change for our future generation", she said. "Two words would speak for the brutalisation and murder of millions".

But Senator Anning is far from chastened.

Other senators said they regretted shaking Senator Anning's hand following his first speech, as is general protocol.

"It was Pauline Hanson on steroids". She said he then asked for a position in her office but she refused. Only time will tell if this speech will be as monumental.

It pisses me off deeply that people like Anning can say whatever they want but will never have their very identity questioned.

Hanson said she stood by her views but accepted Australia was "a multiracial society" and she had always advocated that "you do not have to be white to be Australian".

Anning, who has been in parliament for less than a year has entered into a lose alliance with several conservative independent lawmakers that has boosted his otherwise inconsequential role in Australia's upper house.

The Queenslander called for migration numbers to be slashed, and a ban on Muslim people migrating to Australia.

"The vast majority of the victims of Islamist terrorism are Muslims", Mr Turnbull said. "Those who try to demonize Muslims because of the crimes of a minority are only helping terrorists". "We reject and condemn racism in any form", he tweeted.

"All of us unite together to fight against the scourge of racism", he said.

She moved a motion for the Senate to acknowledge the action of the Holt government, which dismantled the White Australia Policy.

There has been a hugely negative response to his speech in the hours since it was made.

.

And in her Junkee article, she said that with "increasing regularity" politicians were using "race-baiting as an avenue to votes".

"I'm exhausted of having to stand up against against vilification, time and time and time again".
