Charlottesville demonstrators criticize police

Heather Heyer's mother continues her daughter's civil rights advocacy a year after Charlottesville rally

On the one-year anniversary of the violence in Charlottesville and the killing of Heather Heyer, an anti-Nazi protester allegedly mowed down by a white nationalist, President Trump reminded us he is incapable of treating white nationalism as a singular evil - or of offending his white-grievance-obsessed base.

Besides some verbal confrontations between riot police and demonstrators, a rally in Charlottesville marking the anniversary of last year's deadly clash between right- and left-wing activists passed without any major incident. The group came together in direct response to white nationalists who gathered in Charlottesville for a "Unite the Right" rally on August 12, 2017. This year, his official account tweeted a condemnation of "all types of racism and acts of violence". Peace to ALL Americans!'

Then, hundreds of white nationalists and even more counter protesters will demonstrate near the White House Sunday.

The president infamously blamed protesters "on many sides" for the conflict instead of specifically criticizing the racist sentiment that spurred the tragedy.

But some critics jumped on the president's wording of "all types of racism", saying this was just another version of Trump's claim a year ago that "both sides" were responsible for the violence.

Ryan recalled how a group of students and community members faced off against the white supremacist marchers near a statue of Thomas Jefferson on campus, calling it a "remarkable moment of courage and bravery".

White supremacists are slated to hold a rally in front of the White House on Sunday evening to mark the first anniversary of the violent "Unite the Right" demonstration in Charlottesville, Virginia. The Governor has declared a state of emergency in Charlottesville.

Two state police personnel - Lt. H. Jay Cullen and Trooper-Pilot Berke M.M. Bates - died in a helicopter crash responding to the scene.

Authorities have promised an enormous police presence to keep both sides apart and avoid the street brawls that broke out past year in downtown Charlottesville. Among those, Airbnb said it would ban users who rent out their properties to participate in the Unite the Right rally, citing their terms of service, stating users agree, "To treat everyone in the Airbnb community - regardless of their race, religion, national origin, ethnicity, disability, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation or age - with respect, and without judgment or bias".

In Charlottesville, at least one rally is being organized on the University of Virginia campus by a group of student activists, UVA Students United.

"I don't know exactly what will happen, but it probably will not be good", tweeted Richard Spencer, a leader of the so-called "alt-right" movement, who said he would be staying away from the rally.

Saturday marked the anniversary of a march by torch-toting white supremacists a day ahead of the larger event in downtown.

Authorities in Charlottesville say they have seized prohibited items such as brass knuckles as hundreds of people have passed through security checkpoints leading into the city's downtown area. They're very still. You can just barely see the light glint on their helmets.
