Coconut oil is 'pure poison,' says Harvard professor

Coconut oil is 'pure poison,' says Harvard professor

But health professionals are sceptical as there is no study that has shown any significant health benefits of coconut-oil consumption.

In her talk, Michels dispels the myth that coconut oil is healthy by explaining that the oil poses a greater risk to heart health than lard, as it contains high levels of saturated fatty acids - a type of acid which can clog arteries. But as doctors and nutritionists came to understand that simple carbohydrates and sugar are more likely to lead to weight gain than fat is, researchers began studying coconut oil, and people started giving it another chance.

"It's not a hard topic, scientifically", said Frank Sacks, a professor of cardiovascular disease prevention at the Harvard School of Public Health and lead author of an AHA advisory on dietary fats released past year.

Some fans even believe that a spoonful of coconut oil can prevent gingivitis and sinusitis, which is why they spend 10 minutes a day gargling with it - a habit known as "oil pulling".

The title of the video, which has over 400,000 views, is "Coconut Oil and other Nutritional Errors".

The study participants who ate the medium-chain fatty acid diet burned fat quicker than the controls.

"But the reality is when you look at what coconut oil is made of, 80 percent of it is saturated fat and that's similar to butter which is about 60 percent saturated fat or beef fat which is about 40 percent", CBS News medical contributor Dr. Tara Narula told "CBS This Morning" previous year. "This disconnect between lay and expert opinion can be attributed to the marketing of coconut oil in the popular press", the report stated. A tablespoon (15 milliliters) of coconut oil provides 11 grams (0.4 ounces) of saturated fat.

United Kingdom guidelines encourage people to swap saturated fats for unsaturated fats. At this portion, any benefits could easily be negated by the adverse effects of ingesting so much saturated fat.

Based on the fact that they contain a lot of unsaturated fatty acids, experts recommend olive or rapeseed oil as an alternative and, while it can't be used for cooking, flaxseed oil is rich in omega-3 fatty acids and is just as good for the body.

"We are well and sufficiently supplied", she said, according to the translation.

For certain health food shops and wellbeing sites it is the panacea that helps everything from bad hair and mental grogginess to obesity and haemorrhoids.

We can't say we are surprised at Michels's findings - there was always something slightly unsettling about how solidified coconut oil looked.
