The thesis of the New York Times story is that Mr. McGahn cooperated in a way that could hurt Donald Trump in order to protect himself and because he doesn't trust the President.

The story, by Michael Schmidt and Maggie Haberman, said McGahn has provided the Mueller investigation with "detailed accounts about the episodes at the heart of the inquiry into whether President Trump obstructed justice".

Trump, in his tweets, continued to rail against the Mueller investigation, which he has labeled a "witch hunt".

The special counsel is investigating alleged Russian meddling and potential collusion with Trump campaign associates in the 2016 presidential election.

He also said that McGahn's cooperation does not mean that the information is damaging.

People close to McGahn also said he grew concerned Trump had chose to allow him to cooperate in the investigation to construct a defense that he was following McGahn's poor legal advice on decisions such as the Comey firing, which could be viewed as obstruction of Justice, according to the report.

Trump's outside legal counsel, Rudy Giuliani, said McGahn's co-operation would help bolster Trump's claims that he did nothing wrong.

CNN's "K-File", an investigative unit, published a report on Sunday on Beattie and his appearance at the Mencken event, which has been attended in the past by white nationalist Richard Spencer. "And his client is not Donald Trump; his client is the office of the president".

Dean was White House counsel to Nixon during Watergate. Miller, of course, has been the architect of some of Trump's most controversial policies, like the separation of immigrant children from their parents at the southern USA border, and the Islamaphobic travel ban - which Beattie once wrote an editorial defending while he was a visiting instructor at Duke University. "The president wrongly believed that Mr. McGahn would act as a personal lawyer would for clients and exclusively defend his interests to investigators, according to a person with knowledge of his thinking".

In a statement to The New York Times, White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said, "The president and Don have a great relationship". Don't interfere with election like Comey. He didn't obstruct an investigation. Trump's attitude reportedly led McGahn to suspect that the president was setting him up to take the blame for any possible illegal acts of obstruction. McGahn was a strong witness for the President according to Burck and debriefs of DM (Donald McGahn). He went in and sat with prosecutors and the agents, and he provided information.

Darren Beattie, who was a visiting instructor at Duke University before he joined the White House speechwriting team, was sacked Friday after a media inquiry about his appearance at the 2016 H.L. Mencken Club conference, where Beattie spoke on a panel alongside Peter Brimelow. "And probably a very important one".
