Ivanka Trump, administration mark anniversary of Charlottesville riot

CNN host blasts Trump’s anti-racism tweet ‘Remember his record

Trump has retweeted white nationalist material; said Mexicans crossing the United States border are rapists and drug dealers; once referred to a Hispanic Miss Universe as "Miss Housekeeping", and employed Steve Bannon, central figure of the new "alt-right" in America, as his campaign chief and top strategist for a time.

Over 600 people gathered in Charlottesville to express their rejection of white supremacy, nearly a year after the neo-Nazi protests left three dead in this U.S. city.

About 115 miles away in Washington, the organizer of last year's "Unite the Right" event will hold a "White Civil Rights" rally.

Those demonstrations descended into violence after the two sides - some on the right armed with firearms, and some on the left with shields and clubs - met, and several people were injured. Other groups of counter-protesters have permits to gather elsewhere in the city.

Her comments come in contrast to statements made by her father President Donald Trump in the immediate aftermath of the violence at the Unite the Right rally - in which the president suggested there was blame on both sides, prompting an immediate backlash. This from the president who said that Nigerians will never go back to their huts when they come and see America.

This year, he changed his rhetoric, instead denouncing "all types of racism and acts of violence". Peace to ALL Americans! "But you also had people that were very fine people, on both sides".

"I think there are a number of steps that the president has taken to move us in a better direction", he said, citing Trump's support of the opportunity zones legislation and his meetings with African-American pastors and business leaders in the year since the Charlottesville rally.

Jeanne Zaino, professor of political science at Iona College, said: "He has calculated that any straight out condemnation may turn his base another way so he is walking this line where he condemns racism on both sides - as if there were two sides to this".

Authorities have promised an enormous security presence to avoid a repeat of the street brawls that broke out past year in downtown Charlottesville after neo-Nazis, Ku Klux Klansmen and other hate groups marched through the city.

Carlson said police didn't intervene to help her or her friends that night past year.

The counterprotesters lining the rally path chanted "no hate, no fear, KKK is not welcome here", and carried signs that read "solidarity trumps hate." A man who espoused neo-Nazi views drove his vehicle into the counterdemonstators, killing a 32-year-old woman, Heather D. Heyer.

A year after a white nationalist rally traumatized Charlottesville, in the US state of Virginia, with riots and blood, the city is still healing from the shock.
