NY University offers free tuition for all medical students

Be realistic when you calculate how much you’ll need to spend and your budget will be easier to keep

Fresne added that it is too soon to tell if other medical programs will follow in NYU's footsteps in eliminating tuition, but it could be a trend for medical schools moving forward. "It is very important to provide the best conditions for reception, people do not deserve less", - said the assistant to the Dean at NY University in the admissions and Finance Rafael Rivera.

The plan, which takes effect immediately, will cover all current and future students, with annual tuition running about $55,000 annually. Now thousands of medical students and the general public, who are in need of a balanced and affordable medical array of services, will be able to take that commitment right to the bank. Doctors graduate with crippling medical school debt and it sometimes causes them to seek higher paying specialties instead of lower paying ones that face shortages, like primary care or pediatrics. $100 million of this tuition pool was donated by Kenneth G. Langone, the founder of Home Depot, whom which the medical school is named after. Medical students from NYU typically graduate with an average debt of $184,000, with the median debt for medical students across the nation totaling $192,000.

To be sure, applications to medical schools exceed the available seats-the admission rate was just over 41 percent in the most recent application cycle.

Dr Robert Grossman said that "aspiring physicians and surgeons should not be prevented from pursuing a career in medicine because of the prospect of overwhelming financial debt".

All students enrolled in the MD degree program are eligible, regardless of their financial need or academic performance. It's also an important step toward creating inclusivity while addressing growing concerns around the looming physician shortage. "I think a lot of schools would love to be able to do this, but it's more hard for some schools".

University's School of Medicine announced on Thursday (Aug 16) that it is granting all of its students free tuition, regardless of merit or need, The New York Times reports.

Medical schools across the USA have attempted to respond to the student debt crisis by increasing their fundraising efforts to recruit competitive applicants, reduce student debt, and give graduates more flexibility with their career paths.

This trend has been more than 10 years in the making.

Every student at the New York University School of Medicine is getting a full ride. "The model of medical education needs to address changing scientific, social, and economic circumstances as well as dramatic changes in the healthcare delivery system". However, she said some students feel pressure to to only pursue high-paying medical jobs due to their debt.

"That's too late if we wish to expand the pipeline to bring forth the broadest, most-talented group of students", he said in a statement, "and to give them the financial freedom to choose medicine over other careers".

This historic initiative was made possible by more than 2,500 supporters, including trustees, alumni, and friends.

AAMC. "Analysis in Brief".

The current 442 students attending will reportedly have the rest of their tuition paid in full through the medical program, and incoming students will receive their free tuition.
