Remains from North Korea likely American soldiers who fought at Chosin Reservoir

On Wednesday, Trump thanked Kim Jong-un for returning some of the remains of American soldiers from the Korean War after Vice President Mike Pence traveled to Hawaii to receive the remains.

On Wednesday, 55 sets of remains were repatriated to the United States, where they were received at a ceremony in Hawaii.

USA officials have been closely watching North Korea's willingness to abandon its nuclear ambitions.

The latest letter from Kim arrived as concerns rise about North Korea's ballistic missile programme and commitment to denuclearisation.

Byrd, who went to Wonsan in North Korea last week as part of the team that brought back the remains, said he was told by North Korean officials that the remains were recovered from the village of Sin Hung-ri on the east side of the reservoir.

When Pyongyang handed over 55 sets of remains last month, North Korean officials included written information about where the bones had been found, providing researchers with vital clues.

The remains are now "undergoing forensic analysis" at the lab in Hawaii, another official said, adding that the U.S.is "guardedly optimistic" about the situation.

The pledge to return the remains of US soldiers was made during a landmark summit between Trump and Kim in June in Singapore, where North Korea committed to work toward the complete denuclearization of the Korean peninsula.

"We couldn't be sure how many individuals were in each box". The site hosted a famous battle fought from November to December of 1950 during the Korean War. "But we'll see what happens".

He said numerous recovered remains likely belonged to U.S. Army soldiers who fought in the November, 1950 Battle of Chosin Reservoir - 1,024 Americans are still missing from that battle.

Another method of identification was through chest x-rays that were on file for those who served in the Korean War, McKeague said.

"They had been very carefully packaged with padding and packaging that was done to, I think, a very high standard", he said.

Lab officials also will check to see whether any teeth are among the remains, and if so, compare them with a database of dental records of service members missing from the Korean War. The agency has DNA samples from 92 percent of the families of the almost 7,700 Americans still missing from the Korean War.
