Russian Federation trying to hack U.S. elections confirms Trump administration in SHOCK outburst

Russia calls new US election meddling claim'hysteria

The U.S. intelligence community remains concerned about election security, and Russian Federation is still trying to interfere in American elections, Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats said on Thursday.

Russian efforts to interfere in upcoming US midterm elections have yet to reach the intensity of the Kremlin's campaign to disrupt the 2016 presidential vote, but they're only "a keyboard click away" from a more serious attack, Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats said.

He warned: "We continue to see a pervasive messaging campaign by Russian Federation to try to weaken and divide the United States".

Mr Trump's security team, including intelligence director Dan Coats and national security adviser John Bolton, appeared in the White House briefing room to stress that a major effort was underway to protect the integrity of congressional elections in November and the 2020 presidential election.

Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen also discussed the threat, saying free and fair elections are the cornerstone of democracy.

Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats, National Security Adviser John Bolton, DHS Secretary Nielsen and FBI Director Chris Wray each took turns describing how each of their agencies is working to combat the threat.

Stewart, a member of the House Intelligence Committee, said he's often asked what he sees as the biggest threats to the U.S. Quoting a now retired military commander, he said Russian Federation is the only existential threat, North Korea is the most unsafe and China is the most complicated.

Mueller is investigating whether the Trump campaign aided or abetted an attempt by Russian Federation to sway the 2016 presidential election, or tried to cover up the conspiracy.

The White House is working to push the passage of the First Step Act through the Senate aimed to improve criminal justice reform and rehabilitation.

Trump has voiced skepticism about Russia's role in USA election meddling, drawing accusations from Democrats and Republicans alike that he is ignoring a threat to American democracy.

Trump has mulled easing sanctions against Moscow, held warm meetings with Russian President Vladimir Putin and refused to criticise him over the meddling in the 2016 election.

Right before the briefing began, the White House released a letter Bolton sent to Senate Democrats about election interference.

Wray, who took over the Federal Bureau of Investigation a year ago, said "the threat is real" in describing Russia's election-meddling campaign - calling it "information warfare".

Wray said intelligence officials are not yet seeing "the same kinds of efforts to specifically target election infrastructure" as in 2016, but rather "information warfare" carried out through propaganda efforts on social media, The Washington Post reported.

Mr Wray said the FBI had opened investigations into election interference.

"He makes my job harder with some of his tweets and some of the things he said in that press conference are an example of that", Stewart said.
