Salah, Modric & Ronaldo nominated UEFA Men's Player of the Year

Modric, also part of Madrid's Champions League winning team, finished runner-up with Croatia at the World Cup, winning the best player award at the tournament in Russian Federation.

Three France players were in the top 10: Antoine Griezmann of Atletico Madrid was fourth, Kylian Mbappe of Paris Saint-Germain was sixth and Raphael Varane of Real Madrid was eighth.

It may have been a record 13th win in the Champions League for Real but Ronaldo couldn't win La Liga for Madrid, who finished a distant third last season behind Lionel Messi's Barcelona, with seventeen points between the pair.

The victor will be announced on August 30 in an official UEFA ceremony, which will also involve a draw for the group stages. The coaches were not allowed to vote for players from their own team.

Modric was once again instrumental in steering Madrid to the Champions League crown for the fourth time in the past five years, and built on that display by winning the Golden Ball award at this summer's World Cup in Russian Federation. Modric won the Golden Ball as the World Cup's best player in Russian Federation.

Ronaldo, now with Juventus, has won the UEFA award each time Madrid has been European champion since the vote was introduced in 2011. Messi and Barca also won the Copa De Rey, so Messi would be well within his rights to be a bit miffed for his shortlist omission.

The award, which rivals the Ballon d'Or is run by UEFA and perhaps there in lies the reason for Ronaldo's preference over Messi. He also won the Champions League title with Los Blancos.

UEFA have announced the three finalists for the 2017/18 UEFA Men's Player of the Year award.

The three players who received the most points overall from this voting procedure, in alphabetical order, are: Pernille Harder (Denmark - VfL Wolfsburg), Ada Hegerberg (Norway - Olympique Lyonnais), Amandine Henry (France - Olympique Lyonnais).
