Smoking ban in all public housing takes effect nationwide

NYC public housing buildings are now smoke-free

In South Dakota, nearly 3000 people live in public housing, but the rule is nothing new in KOTA Territory.

In his statement, Koval addressed how public authorities should educate smokers on the dangers of smoking and secondhand smoke, rather than using eviction as an enforcement mechanism.

Lewis said the federal smoke-free policy only applies to roughly 2,600 MHA units the agency owns and operates and not to the Section 8 voucher program.

In addition to reducing the risk of fires and lowering maintenance costs, HUD said the ban on smoking would drastically improve indoor air quality in public housing spaces.

"A lot of people like to smoke cigarettes".

The authority met with its tenants about the policy change during the past few months.

Resident Jessie Penrose is unhappy with the decision.

"I don't have anywhere else to live, but I can't come to get your house and tell you what to do or how to do".

The Muskegon Housing Commission is encouraging its tenants to kick the habit.

"We explained the process to them and we have given them the opportunity to weigh in on it", he said, adding it was in their annual plan.

"I don't want them to lose their housing is the bottom line. They have more things to fix than telling somebody they can't smoke", Robinson said.

But the City of Phoenix Housing Department already had that rule in place.

Tuesday is the deadline for public housing authorities to implement smoke-free policies.

The smoking ban goes beyond the inside of apartment units.
