State investigators subpoena Cohen in Trump Foundation probe

Michael Cohen

"I believe that a pardon from Donald Trump would by definition be dirty", Davis said, because Trump has "acted so corruptly in his business endeavors and in the number of lies that he utterly unapologetically articulates everyday as president of the United States".

Sanders did take the chance to criticize Democrats who have raised the prospect of impeachment, calling it a "sad attempt" to win in the November midterm elections.

"Today he stood up and testified under oath that Donald Trump directed him to commit a crime by making payments to two women for the principal goal of influencing an election", Davis added. But the amounts and the dates all lined up with the payments made to Daniels and Playboy Playmate Karen McDougal in the weeks and months leading up to the 2016 White House election.

"In fact my first question when I heard about it was did they come out of the campaign, because that could be a little dicey", Trump said in the interview, a day after his personal lawyer, Michael Cohen, implicated him and said the maneuver was created to sway the election.

When asked to explain why Trump told Fox News on Wednesday he only knew of payments arranged by Cohen "later on", despite audio recordings of Trump discussing them with Cohen, Sanders responded she has "commented on this pretty extensively".

There was no initial confirmation of the plea deal reported by several media including NBC News and The New York Times, or of the specific charges involved, but Cohen was set to appear in Manhattan criminal court at 4 pm (2000 GMT). His lawyer Rudy Giuliani has said the payments were made to spare Trump and his family embarrassment and were unrelated to the campaign. But any cooperation from Cohen could help him during sentencing. You know, I think the normal reaction we would expect under our constitutional system would be that this would really provoke Congress and the House of Representatives to start looking seriously at the president. But he denies telling Cohen to do these things. Their alleged collusion with Russian Federation continues to be the justification that Obama intelligence community officials give for their massive, rights-violating espionage operation against the Trump campaign.

"If you FIGHT BACK or say anything bad about the Rigged Witch Hunt, they scream Obstruction!" The Washington Post declared Tuesday's news as Trump's "worst day of the Russian Federation investigation".

"It was not the original mission", he said of the Mueller investigation.

Earlier Wednesday, Trump tweeted that he felt "badly" after the conviction of his former campaign chairman Paul Manafort on eight felony tax and bank fraud charges.

And as CBS News has previously reported, Cohen has indicated he is willing to tell special counsel Robert Mueller that Mr. Trump was aware of the 2016 Trump Tower meeting before it took place, although he has shown no evidence to support this claim. The charges against Manafort mostly predate his work on Trump's campaign. Although he has admitted the women were paid, Trump has repeatedly denied the alleged affairs.

Cohen's sentencing is scheduled for December 12, with bail set at $500,0000.

Davis said Cohen "would be able to provide information useful to the special counsel" but didn't elaborate on what that information may be.

Federal agents had seized documents and files from Cohen in April that stemmed from a referral from Mueller's office.
