Trump says he's willing to talk to Iran without preconditions

Trump's statements drew responses from the U.S.as well. "For now, it's not appropriate to talk with the U.S".

The statement drew many remarks from Iranian as well as worldwide politicians. Hard-line opponents of engagement with the West, in turn, have gained stature from Mr. Trump's move, which validated their argument that the USA can't be trusted.

"But now maybe Trump wants to give the Iranian people an opportunity and, God willing, it could be a way to get past our disastrous situation", added Hushiar, an office manager in her 50s.

Iranian Vice-President Eshagh Jahangiri said the government and the central bank would unveil a new economic plan by the end of this week to tackle the US sanctions and the rial's fall.

Mr Trump's remarks represented a marked softening in rhetoric from a week ago, when he lashed out at Mr Rouhani, saying: "Never, ever threaten the United States again or you will suffer consequences the likes of which few throughout history have ever suffered before".

Hamid Reza Asefi, a former Iranian diplomat, also said that Trump should bring Washington's hawks, including Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and National Security Advisor John Bolton, into coordination with his own stances before any possible talks with Iran.

Mr. Rouhani's office couldn't be immediately reached for comment.

Mr Trump said last night that he would meet the Iranian leadership "any time they want to" and regardless of whether it would agree to stricter curbs on its nuclear programme.

"Why would the Iranians negotiate with an administration that is internally inconsistent?" said Ali Vaez, the director of the Iran Project at the International Crisis Group.

Back in May, Pompeo had set 12 conditions for talks with Iran, which were dismissed by Tehran.

As Iran remains in the nuclear deal with other world powers-including Britain, Russia and China-that don't sent it threatening tweets, there seems to be little incentive for the country's leaders to humor Trump.

Trump began ramping up the public pressure on Iran about a week ago, saying on Twitter that the USA won't tolerate Iran's "DEMENTED WORDS OF VIOLENCE & DEATH" - a response to a warning that Iran's leader made to Trump.

"The United States has proved that it is unreliable, so engagement and dialogue with the current USA government is impossible", Foreign Ministry spokesman Bahram Qasemi said earlier on Monday.

The president - who has defied American foreign policy orthodoxy by meeting with North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un - indicated Monday he was prepared to sit down with Iranian President Hassan Rouhani anytime and without preconditions, should his counterpart want such a tête-à-tête.

Thirdly, Iran is not almost as politically isolated as North Korea, as Rouhani's recent visit to Europe demonstrates.

Iran's interior minister said Tehran did not trust Washington as a negotiating partner.
