When 5G networks get here, Motorola’s newest smartphone will be ready

Verizon just let slip when its 5G mobile service will launch

Motorola launched the Moto Z3 yesterday.

Sadly, the event only included the Moto Z3 and the 5G Moto Mod. Google, which had a greater ambition for modular phones and LG, which tried modular phones once, have both given up on the idea.

Motorola says the Moto Z3 with 5G Moto Mod will be capable of wireless data speeds of up to 5Gbps.

The good news is that while the Moto Z3 contains year-old hardware, it only costs $480.

As stated earlier on, the Motorola Moto Z3 will be available exclusively on Verizon network in the U.S. The device will start shipping on Augst 16. However, in a surprising decision, Motorola has opted to equip the Moto Z3 with last year's Snapdragon 835 processor, rather than the Snapdragon 845 chipset found in the latest flagships.

The add-on is Motorola's 18th "Moto Mod" accessory, which people can buy to add some sort of hardware boost to the company's relatively cheap smartphones.

For optics, the smartphone also comes with a dual camera module comprising of a 12MP primary sensor with f/2.0 aperture and secondary monochrome camera with dual LED flash. There is an 8-megapixel image sensor at the front for selfies with 1.12 micron pixels and 84-degree field of view.

Numerous Z3 Play's hallmark features, like its dual-lens cameras capable of shooting in true black-and-white, as well as its 6-inch full HD+ Super AMOLED display, return in the Moto Z3. Also, the device runs on the latest Android 8.1 Oreo OS out of the box but is expected to get a speedy update to Android 9.0 P when it arrives. Here we are just over a couple of months later and the Moto Z3 and the Moto 5G Moto Mod are now official. Most of the magnetic attachments seemingly boost battery life, but one of the most intriguing accessories is a mod that lets the device tap into the 5G network. For the time being, the focus is on the capabilities of the Moto Z3 as they exist in August 2018, and not what they may be at some point next year. The smartphone flaunts a glass-sandwich design and features a side-mounted fingerprint scanner for security. In terms of connectivity, you get WiFi, Bluetooth 5.0, NFC, GPS and a USB Type-C port. The smartphone will be available in ceramic black color.

This 5G mod is pretty thick, but it includes a 2000mAh battery.

Motorola promises the 5G-ready Z3 can download 90 Spotify songs in 10 seconds. There is now no information about the eagerly awaited Motorola One Power and the Moto One smartphones.
