World Cup players returned 'hungrier' says Tottenham captain Lloris

Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino says Brexit is part of the reason why his side did not sign a single player before the start of the season.

As such, even Spurs fans have begun to joke about the so-called curse.

"I'm really pleased to be part of the winning team at the World Cup", he said when asked how the experience of winning the title could be of benefit to Spurs.

Tottenham's Dele Alli, left, scores his side's second goal of the game against Newcastle during their English Premier League soccer match at St James' Park in Newcastle, England, Saturday Aug. 11, 2018. Harry Kane, Vertonghen and Alli, just three of the team's players who had a busy summer in Russian Federation.

Alli netted his first goal of the campaign to earn three points with a header, and the 22-year-old has shown he has a knack of arriving in the right positions to score.

Vertonghen said: "You go a bit blind and you hope for some contact, and I had it".

The woodwork had earlier denied Mohamed Diame an equaliser, Newcastle's Senegalese midfielder rattling the upright with a rasping left-foot volley.

He added: "It was always going to be hard coming to a place like this on the opening day of the season to play such hard opponents, so this result makes me extremely proud of the players".

Both sides came close in a frenzied opening to the second half, the best chances falling to Moussa Sissoko and Kenedy at either end, while Newcastle debutant Salomon Rondon saw a deflected effort hit the bar late on.

In the event, Vertonghen's contribution did not prove decisive at St James' Park as Joselu levelled within three minutes, and it took Dele Alli's 18th-minute back-post header to win it in a lively start on Tyneside.

The visitors needed just eight minutes to get their noses in front when Jan Vertonghen converted via the crossbar, with referee Martin Atkinson awarding the goal after being alerted that the ball had crossed the line.

Newcastle, whose lack of striking options was one of the themes of their 2017-18, responded nearly immediately through Joselu, who found space between the Tottenham center-backs to head Matt Ritchie's excellent cross past Hugo Lloris.

Their glee didn't last long, however, with Alli arriving at the back post to head in Aurier's deep cross for what proved to be the victor.
