Christine Blasey Ford to testify against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh

Deadline Passes, Senate Awaits Word On Christine Blasey Ford Testimony

Ford, a research psychologist at Palo Alto University, is still hoping the Senate Judiciary Committee will meet several conditions. I've pondered how her story could be squared with the blunt denials of Kavanaugh and Mike Judge, along with the lack of any memory of such an event by the other supposed attendees.

Grassley has rebuffed other Ford requests, including calling additional witnesses. "I never filed a police report and it took me 30 years to tell my parents", actress and activist Alyssa Milano tweeted in response to Mr Trump.

Trump mused to confidants that the "fake" attacks against his nominee were meant to undermine his presidency, according to a White House official and a Republican close to the White House. "I'm shocked and appalled by the Republicans' refusal to wait 24 hours for a hearing and instead rush forward with a vote on Monday".

And, after a few days of relative quiet, President Donald Trump has ramped up his attacks on Ford's character and questioned the credibility of her accusations.

A spokesman for the committee's chairman, Sen. John Cornyn of Texas, a member of the committee.

"Dr. Ford accepts the Committee's request to provide her first-hand knowledge of Brett Kavanaugh's sexual misconduct next week", the lawyers wrote to the committee.

The lawyers held a call with staffers that lasted about an hour on Sunday and reached an agreement, according to a senior Senate aide. The committee still has to decide whether Kavanaugh is fit to become President Donald Trump's second appointee to the Supreme Court.

Kavanaugh's suggestions for questions to Clinton in 1998 included, "If Monica Lewinsky says that you inserted a cigar into her vagina while you were in the Oval Office area, would she be lying?"

Earlier in the night, Grassley said on Twitter that he had granted an extension to Ford after a 10 pm (0200 GMT Saturday) deadline he set to reach a deal with Ford's lawyers had passed.

Republicans are frustrated over what they say was the deliberate timing of the last-minute revelation of Ford's allegation, accusing Democrats of seeking to prevent the process from finishing before the midterm elections in a few weeks. "It's not my normal approach to b indecisive", the Iowa senator wrote.

Ford's husband, Russell Ford, was quoted by the Post as saying the thought that Kavanaugh could be considered for the Supreme Court after Trump took office troubled his wife so much that she considered moving as far away as New Zealand.

Ford says an inebriated Kavanaugh pinned her on a bed, muffled her cries and tried removing her clothes when both were teenagers in the 1980s. Ford also said Mark Judge, a friend and Georgetown Preparatory classmate of Kavanaugh, was in the room with her and Kavanaugh at the time of the assault.

It's not clear why these women weren't more clearly identified in CNN's story.

Ford's request for security comes after her lawyers said she has relocated her family due to death threats.

'We were told no decision has been made on this important issue, even though various senators have been dismissive of her account and should have to shoulder their responsibility to ask her questions, ' the attorneys said.

Republicans on the committee and Ford's lawyers had disagreed on numerous counts. As for Democrats, if they can make sure that all 49 of their member s- including in red states - oppose Kavanaugh unless there's a real investigation of Ford's charges, then that will increase the pressure on Republicans even more, including on Collins and Murkowski.

Kavanaugh's confirmation appears to turn mostly on the support or opposition of three Republican senators: Jeff Flake of Arizona, who is on the Judiciary panel that Republicans control 11-10; Susan Collins of ME and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska. Meanwhile, Democrats have made numerous attempts to stall Kavanaugh's selection, with the GOP still holding a slim majority in the Senate. "So I thought that the president's tweet was completely inappropriate and wrong". Republican Sen. Susan Collins of ME, who hasn't declared support for Kavanaugh, called the remark "appalling".

Kavanaugh, 53, has denied Blasey's allegation and will be given the chance to respond to her testimony.
