Coastal communities prepare for Florence and Isaac

Hurricane Florence remained a unsafe Category 4 storm with winds of 130 miles per hour as of 5:00 a.m. Wednesday.

Subtropical Storm Joyce formed at 5PM Thursday with 45 miles per hour wind and is to the northwest of Helene.

A Tropical Storm Watch which had been issued for St. Kitts and Nevis, Montserrat, Barbuda and Antigua was also expected to be discontinued by Thursday evening. On the forecast track, Isaac will move over the eastern and central Caribbean Sea during the next few days.

"Isaac is a small hurricane and uncertainty in the forecast is higher than normal", the National Hurricane Center said. Given its expected slow speed once it rolls ashore, they warned the heavy rain and storm could spread across a wide area. On the forecast track, the center of Florence will move over the southwestern Atlantic Ocean between Bermuda and the Bahamas tonight, and approach the coast of North Carolina or SC in the hurricane warning area on Thursday and Friday, and move slowly near the coastline through Saturday.

Another system in north-central Atlantic waters was upgraded to a subtropical storm, Joyce, Wednesday afternoon as it approached the Azores. Current estimates have Isaac passing nearly 150 miles south of St. Croix early Friday morning.

Meanwhile, what could be the world's most risky storm at the moment is Super Typhoon Mangkhut, which now has winds of 165 miles per hour (with 200 miles per hour gusts) and is taking aim on the Philippines, according to the Joint Typhoon Warning Center.

It's a detail that almost got lost among all the wind, rain and storm surge data sent out by the National Hurricane Center on Wednesday. Then, Friday through Saturday Florence is expected to slow its forward progress and turn toward the west southwest, slowly advancing across central SC and weakening with time.

Some coastal flooding is possible in areas of onshore winds. "This rainfall may cause life-threatening flash floods".

Meanwhile, Caribbean Airlines has announced that due to Tropical Storm Isaac flights BW 434 BW 435 Port-of-Spain to St. Lucia will be affected and passengers are advised to contact its reservation offices for rebooking on the next available service. Along the coast, large waves will accompany the surge.
