Europe extends Ryder Cup lead to 10

Tony Finau who is of Samoan and Tongan descent will be the first Polynesian to play in the Ryder Cup

Francesco Molinari and Tommy Fleetwood made Ryder Cup history as Europe earned a commanding 10-6 lead ahead of the final-day singles despite a gutsy American fightback in the Saturday afternoon foursomes.

Brooks Koepka and Tony Finau held out for a 1up victory over Justin Rose and Jon Rahm - who were two up with six holes remaining - while Dustin Johnson and Rickie Fowler were utterly dominated in a 4&2 victory over a poor Rory McIlroy and Thorbjørn Olesen. With four birdies over their last five holes, they won 4 and 3.

All eyes were then fixed on the fourth match of the day where Americans Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas held off Ian Poulter and Jon Rahm 2&1 to stem the bleeding and keep the US clinging to Europe's coat tails ahead of the foursomes.

Leading 5-3 overnight after a clean sweep of the foursomes matches on Friday afternoon, Europe came out on another crisp, clear-blue French morning at the same rampaging pace, and the USA wilted under the onslaught.

But Team USA at least had the honour of winning the final match of a super Saturday, with Spieth and Thomas fighting back from losing the first two holes to cruise to a 4&3 victory over an erratic Rory McIlroy and Poulter.

It was the first time Europe had won all four foursomes matches - having suffered a 4-0 reverse in the format en route to defeat in Hazeltine two years ago - and their first sweep in either format since 1989.

"The Europeans played very good golf this afternoon on a hard setup and in hard conditions and we didn't play our best golf".

Poulter kept Europe alive though before Spieth and Thomas claimed the Americans' first point for 24 hours.

Reed was the face of the US victory in the 2016 Ryder Cup at Hazeltine, but this version of him has been barely recognizable from the one who was labeled "Captain America".

And now, after Europe's stunning turnaround in the afternoon foursomes session on Friday, the USA comes into Day 2 reeling and facing a two-point deficit.

Rookie Finau, a captain's pick by Furyk, saw his tee shot at the par-three 16th hit the wooden boards separating the green from the water, before spinning into the air and coming to rest 3 feet from the hole for a simple birdie.

Paris is known as the "City of Light", but United States of America is facing dark times after Europe edged to a commanding 10-6 lead heading into Sunday's final singles session at the Ryder Cup. But Spieth and Thomas are clearly viewed as one of the best American teams and need to play like it in order to get the Americans back into the competition.

Molinari added: 'We knew they would be upset and we were ready this morning. That makes for a dilemma: do you put those differences aside for the good of the team, or are they too great to overcome?

"It was the Casey Express train the front nine", Hatton said after collecting his first Ryder Cup point.
