Lengel: Trump's Disgraceful Shaming of His Attorney General Jeff Sessions

House Speaker Paul Ryan joined other top conservatives in denouncing President Donald Trump's recent tweet lamenting Attorney General Jeff Sessions' indictment of two Republicans ahead of midterm elections.

Sen. Ben Sasse (R-Neb.) declared that the US justice system shouldn't be regarded as one in a "banana republic" after President Trump tweeted against the ongoing prosecution of two Republican congressmen on corruption charges.

Mr Trump wrote on Twitter that the justice department's decision to file charges put "easy wins now in doubt".

Rep. Duncan Hunter of California was indicted and accused of fraud and stealing campaign funds for personal use, and Rep. Chris Collins of NY was indicted and accused of insider trading.

Critics view Trump's disparaging remarks about Sessions for his department's indictments of two Republican lawmakers as an example of how much Trump misunderstands the president's authority and obligations under the US constitutional system. Both have pleaded not guilty.

Collins' indictment on insider trading charges also stemmed from a call he made to his son in June 2017 - during a congressional picnic at the White House, five months after the president took office.

For the president of the United States to say, 'don't prosecute Republicans, only prosecute democrats, ' - I was a prosecutor for eight years.

Baker noted that even if all of this remains in the level of discourse and Trump doesn't fire Sessions or anyone else in the Justice Department he's unhappy with, the president "severely damages the administration of justice" every time he makes a threatening remark.

In his tweet, Trump was referring to Republican Reps.

I may not agree with everything Jeff Sessions believes in, but he certainly deserves credit for hanging in there and taking the Justice Department job serious enough to let Rod Rosenstein do his job.

The tweet was just another attempt by the president into shaming his attorney general into resigning.

"So the justice system is under attack, and I'll be looking forward to statements from this nominee as a court of appeals judge, let alone nominee of the United States Supreme Court", he added shortly before confirmation hearings were set to begin for Kavanaugh.

The president has repeatedly attacked Sessions for recusing himself from an investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 USA presidential election campaign.

While there have been exceptions, longstanding protocol holds that the Justice Department should be left to operate free of political influence from the White House. If the charges end up being dropped as a result of Trump's tweet, then Toobin would have a stronger argument.

Mr Trump has often clashed with Mr Sessions over the Russian Federation inquiry.

Some Democrats have spoken out loudly about Trump's shaming of Sessions.

Judge Andrew Napolitano warned President Donald Trump that his latest salvo against Attorney General Jeff Sessions is "perfect fodder for the cannon of Bob Mueller and Never Trumpers".

Similarly, President Trump's frustration with his own attorney general appears to be growing.

The White House had no comment on Trump's tweets, but said he chose to not leave the White House and focus on trade calls.
