SC Congressman Makes Sexual Assault Joke About Kavanaugh Controversy

Ford Willing to Testify With Restrictions Next Thursday

Doctor Christine Blasey Ford, a professor in California, has claimed Judge Brett Kavanaugh sexually assaulted her more than 30 years ago when they were teenagers, something he vehemently denies.

Dr. Ford has stated that she's willing to testify in front of the Senate Judiciary Committee if required, and while Republicans have cautiously said they want that to happen... they're also pressing to move forward with Kavanaugh's SCOTUS confirmation vote.

Donald Trump has questioned the credibility of the woman who has accused his Supreme Court nominee of sexual assault, saying she would have reported the attack to police at the time if the attack "was as bad as she says". Trump, referring to Christine Blasey Ford, the Northern California psychology professor who has accused Kavanaugh of sexual assault, asked, "Why didn't somebody call the Federal Bureau of Investigation 36 years ago?"

Collins is an important player because she and a handful of other borderline senators could make the difference in the final vote on Kavanaugh in the Senate. "That's when I will make my determination in regards to Judge Kavanaugh".

The woman's attorneys called the date set by Republicans "arbitrary", according to multiple United States news reports.

A petition backing Prof Ford, signed by more than 1,000 alumnae from Holton-Arms, her former Maryland high school, was delivered on Thursday to two Democratic women senators.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell expressed confidence on Thursday that Kavanaugh will ultimately be confirmed. "They've delayed it a week already".

Professor Ford is willing to tell her story - but only if agreement can be reached on "terms that are fair and which ensure her safety", her lawyer said on Thursday (local time).

The accusations from Christine Blasey Ford, denied vehemently by Kavanaugh, threaten to slow his Senate confirmation vote, with Democrats saying the FBI should investigate the charges, a demand that is not gaining traction among Republicans.

Kavanaugh has denied the allegation and said he would testify to that under oath.

The tweets came a day after an attorney for Ford said that her appearing at planned Senate hearing on Monday to detail her claims is "not possible" but that she could testify later in the week. Lisa Murkowski, whose support in the 51-49 GOP-run Senate would likely be pivotal. It's telling that the president tweeted out that "facts don't matter".

The summit's emcee, Gil Mertz of the Family Research Council, questioned Democrats' intentions by comparing the allegation against Kavanaugh to the accusations of physical abuse against Democratic National Committee Deputy Chair Keith Ellison, who is running for attorney general in Minnesota. Ford's lawyers and committee staff were negotiating how she would testify. Resentments go back decades to the Democrats' attack on Supreme Court nominee Robert Bork in 1987, with skirmishes turning to all-out political and procedural war over high court nominees at the end of the Obama administration, when Republicans declined to take up the nomination of Merrick Garland for the Supreme Court.

Ford's legal team has said she strongly prefers that her allegations are fully investigated before she testifies.

Miranda's new comments are a significant development in what remains a largely "she said, he said" account of events between Ford and Kavanaugh.

"He said / she said" is an unfortunate reality of many sexual assault cases; it is not something to which we should aspire.

Republican panel member Lindsey Graham said on Twitter that requiring an FBI investigation of a 36-year-old allegation "is not about finding the truth, but delaying the process till after the midterm elections".

Trump's outburst saw a new #MeToo era hashtag storm the internet, with #WhyIDidntReport the top trending conversation starter on US Twitter, as people - mostly women - vented outrage over past transgressions and voiced solidarity with Ford.

"The people are fired up" about Kavanaugh and "believe he does" have the character to serve on the Supreme Court, according to attendee Roman Buhler of Virginia.
