Tropical Storm Gordon brings hurricane warning to Gulf Coast

The hurricane warning was placed into effect for the area stretching from the mouth of the Pearl River in MS to the Alabama-Florida border.

The forecast now calls for Gordon to become a Category 1 Hurricane as it makes landfall along the Gulf. According to a report by CNN, 13 million people are under a tropical storm warning as of Monday afternoon, and nearly 2 million people are under hurricane watches and storm surge warnings.

Both radar observations along with Hurricane Hunter data has shown a steady increase in strength and organization over the past 12 hours and winds are now sustained at 50 MPH.

In New Orleans, Mayor LaToya Cantrell issued a voluntary evacuation notice for areas outside the levee system.

Gordon is expected to produce up to six inches of rain in parts, which could cause flash flooding. Gordon will be tracking through the gulf overnight and heading toward the LA and MS coastlines for late Tuesday.

Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards declared a state of emergency Monday and said 200 National Guard troops will be deployed to southeastern Louisiana. A storm surge watch spread west to the mouth of the Mississippi River in Louisiana, and east to Navarre, Florida.

For everyone else, the mayor is urging them to stock up on supplies, and shelter in place. A warning means the expected conditions (winds greater that 74 mph for hurricanes and winds greater than 39 mph for tropical storm-force winds) are likely within the next 36 hours.

People all along the Gulf Coast, from Louisiana to the Florida panhandle, were busy preparing for the storm's arrival.

The Naples Daily News reports that Naples beachfront stores were getting hardly any foot traffic Monday as the storm approached.

Although some storm systems have been known to help dissipate Red Tide, it was unclear Monday how the churn from Gordon may affect the toxic algae bloom blanketing 130 miles of the southwest Florida coast.

In a tweet, Miami Beach Police advised residents and visitors that the Labor Day holiday was "NOT a beach day", with rough surf and potential rip currents.

The National Weather Service said conditions were "possible" for tornadoes in the affected parts of South Florida on Monday night.

Gordon formed into a tropical storm near the Florida Keys early Monday as it moved west-northwest at 17 miles per hour (28 kph).

"We're a beach coffee shop, and if people can't go to the beach, then we won't get any customers". More than 4,000 Florida Power & Light customers lost power Monday due to weather conditions.

In anticipation of heavy rains, the Flood Protection Authority-East (FPA) has closed 21 floodgates on the Lake Borgne Surge Barrier near New Orleans, according to a press release.
