Trump postpones November trip to Ireland

Politicians and activists in Ireland had indicated they would hold protests during Mr Trump's visit.

In addition to visiting the Irish capital of Dublin, Trump was expected to travel to a golf course he bought in County Clare in 2014.

"The US side has cited scheduling reasons", he added.

But White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders later told reporters that no final decision had been made.

The US President had been due to visit Ireland on November 12.

His visit to Ireland was due to coincide with that trip. "As details are confirmed we will let you know".

President Trump has canceled a planned trip to Ireland, the Irish government said Tuesday, amid planned demonstrations to protest his climate policies, worldwide relations and treatment of immigrants, women and minorities.

Virgin Media News political correspondent Gavan Reilly has suggested that the visit may be postponed rather than cancelled outright.

It was to be his first visit to the country since becoming president in 2016.

He had originally been invited by former taoiseach Enda Kelly on his final St. Patrick's Day visit to the White House past year, an offer that was reiterated by Mr Varadkar last March.

Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar opposed extending an invitation to Mr Trump when he was a cabinet minister, but changed his mind when he became PM.

How long that will last remains to be seen: Donald Trump's position as US President has come under increasing pressure over the past week, with further insider revelations painting a picture of an administration which is eve=n greater disarray than had previously been imagined.

He said: "It will be controversial because everything Donald Trump does these days is controversial".

Brendan Howlin, the leader of the Irish Labour Party, accused Trump of being "no friend of democracy and human rights" in an August 31 tweet calling on people to join anti-Trump protests.
