Even before the beginning of the crucial negotiations with Canada on 5 September, president Trump began threatening Canada during the weekend.
Trumka, who is head of the American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO), said on Fox News Sunday of Trump's policies: "Unfortunately, to date, the things that he's done to hurt workers outpace what he's done to help workers".
"Congress should not interfere with these negotiations or I will simply terminate NAFTA entirely and we will be far better off".
After intense negotiations last week, US and Canadian trade teams failed to strike a deal before Mr. Trump's Friday deadline.
The Toronto Star quoted Trump as saying that any trade deal with Canada would be "totally on our terms". "The government of Canada will not sign an agreement unless it is good for Canada and good for Canadians".
The negotiations to rewrite it dragged on for a year and Canada stayed on the sidelines this summer while the USA and Mexico executed the hard bargaining.
"There is no political necessity to keep Canada in the new NAFTA deal".
Trump's attack came just two days ahead of another round of talks with Mexico and Canada on NAFTA, which Trump believes has cost American factory jobs. "And it's pretty hard to see how that would work without having Canada in the deal".
U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders urged New Hampshire workers to embrace the labor movement's principle of solidarity in response to what he called the "divisive" politics of President Donald Trump. But it's questionable whether Mr. Trump can unilaterally exclude Canada from a deal to replace the three-nation NAFTA agreement, without the approval of Congress. The top Canadian trade envoy, Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland, then hurried to Washington for talks aimed at preserving Canada's membership in the regional trade agreement.
Trump previously set a deadline for Friday to reach the trilateral deal. Nieto's successor, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, has had representatives at the U.S. -Mexico talks, but if the deal is not signed before he takes office he could add new demands and complicate the deal.
"Right now, the US has the negotiating leverage in the negotiating room but Canada has the leverage in terms of Congress, the business community and the general USA public, but that balance will not last forever", Ujczo said.
Mike Huckabee took issue on Labor Day with AFL/CIO President Richard Trumka over his comments about the economy and American workers, saying there is no way he could say matters are not good. American and Canadian negotiators will return to negotiations on Wednesday.
Canada doesn't have much of an objection to the auto provisions of the U.S. Ottawa does have other complaints.
When the Trump administration notified Congress past year that it meant to renegotiate NAFTA, critics note that it said it would enter talks with both Canada and Mexico. Between 8 and 10 percent of Kansas agriculture exports are sold to Canada, including meat from the state's packing plants, flour and soybean products.
