White House plan to defend Kavanaugh relies heavily on women

Yet, according to reports, Democrats were in possession of Ford's letter for months and sat on it. Feinstein personally met with Kavanaugh and didn't bring up this "extremely serious" charge of sexual assault. Consistent with that practice, I asked Senator Feinstein's office yesterday to join me in scheduling these follow-ups.

"Any issues that have come up have been turned over to the people that do the background investigations and we'll see what they come up with", Leahy said at the time.

A potential "no" vote from Flake would complicate the judge's prospects.

The Supreme Court often gives the final word on highly contentious laws and its nine judges have an enormous impact on USA political life.

Could there be a delay? If that "takes a little delay, it'll take a little delay".

A committee spokesperson said late Sunday Grassley was trying to arrange separate, followup calls with Kavanaugh and Ford before the scheduled vote, but just for aides to Grassley and California Democrat Feinstein.

Sen. Jeff Flake, R-Ariz., on Monday said that he "would have voted no" if a public hearing with Kavanaugh and Ford wasn't agreed to.

She added: 'This is not a politically-motivated action.

"I did not do this back in high school or at any time", he said in a statement provided by the White House.

Democrats had demanded a delay in the committee's vote in order to let the FBI investigate.

The Democrats have demanded a delay. "We have to get to the bottom of this".

So will the panel hear testimony? Richard J. Durbin, D-Ill., said Ford needs to be heard but argued that it would be "too fast" for her to appear on Capitol Hill this week.

Ford "is willing to do whatever it takes to get her story forth", her lawyer, Debra Katz, told NBC's "Today" show during a round of morning TV appearances.

"I don't know enough about Dr Ford and her allegations yet" to reach a judgement, Collins said in the Senate Monday afternoon.

Kavanaugh has vigorously denied the allegations, saying they are "completely false".

"She was weighing her desire and her belief that she had a civic duty to provide this information to those making the decision about Brett Kavanaugh with, frankly, her fear about coming forward", Banks told NPR.

Ford said Kavanaugh and a friend - both "stumbling drunk" - corralled her in a bedroom when she was around 15 and Kavanaugh was around 17. The therapist's notes, portions of which were provided by Ford and reviewed by The Washington Post, do not mention Kavanaugh's name but say she reported that she was attacked by students "from an elitist boys' school" who went on to become "highly respected and high-ranking members of society in Washington".

Following the initial firestorm over the allegation, leading groups on the left and right tell ABC News they are readying major advertising buys to push key Senators to either move forward on or put a stop to Kavanaugh's confirmation.

"I am willing to talk to the Senate Judiciary Committee in any way the Committee deems appropriate to refute this false allegation, from 36 years ago, and defend my integrity".

She told the Post that she was able to escape after Mark Judge, a friend of Kavanaugh's who was in the room, jumped on top of them and everyone tumbled.

President Trump earlier Monday indicated he was open to postponing the confirmation proceedings in Congress while allegations against Kavanaugh are investigated.

What could happen with the vote? The committee planned a new round of public hearings with Kavanaugh to investigate the allegation.

"It seemed like a lot of times the staff was cooperating at times ... about judicial nominations", Kavanaugh said at his recent hearing. The committee, chaired by Sen. The election came one year after Justice Clarence Thomas was confirmed to the Supreme Court despite allegations that he had sexually harassed a subordinate, Anita Hill, in the workplace.
