Democrats Seize on Trump Administration's Latest Obamacare Move

US President Donald Trump

With key U.S. elections just over two weeks away, polls suggest the anticipated "blue wave" of Democratic voters might not be as powerful as it had seemed just a few months ago.

Even as President Donald Trump argues at rallies that the midterms are about him and that the Republican Party has a great chance at success, in private the president already is setting the groundwork, in case of a defeat by the GOP, for placing the blame on others, according to two people familiar with the conversations, Politico reported on Monday. The upshot is that the majority of representatives, senators, governors and state legislators who win office this year will be on record as embracing a key tenet of Obamacare.

Senate Democrats contend they are positioned to at least make a run at the majority for the first time in a dozen years and, unlike in 2006, more districts are in play.

The president did not say Monday what the cost of any additional tax cut would be to the budget, nor whether he would offset the lost revenue with cuts to spending.

Leaders are clear about what's not on the agenda: impeachment of Trump - at least until the outcome of Special Counsel Robert Mueller's probe of Russian meddling in the 2016 USA elections and possible Trump campaign collusion with Moscow.

"Republican candidates across the country have been lying about their records and policies to claim they support coverage of pre-existing conditions for months", Lauren Passalacqua, a spokeswoman for the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, said in a statement.

Notably, his current approval rating is two points higher than President Barack Obama was with registered voters, according to the same poll in late October 2010, just before Obama's first midterm election. The question is how many.

"Their arrogance may be what actually costs them control of the Senate", said Hertel, campaign chairman for Senate Democrats.

"The House and the Senate always seemed likely to produce somewhat differing outcomes, which complicates a "blue wave" narrative". It should also be kept in mind that Republicans in many states have rejigged, or "gerrymandered", electoral districts and instituted voter suppression laws to their advantage.

Still, history is on the Democrats' side. Historically, the presidential party takes a hit in the midterms after the first presidential election, and Trump is hoping to reverse that trend.

Trump recently slammed Democrats via Twitter, accusing them of being an "angry ruthless unhinged mob determined to get power by any means necessary".

It's an open seat race for the seat now held by Republican Gov. Brian Sandoval, who has reached the end of his term. The FiveThirtyEight political website, widely respected for its statistical analyses, gives the Democrats five chances in six to retake the House.

During Trump's presidency, Democrats on that committee have sought 64 subpoenas, which Republican committee members have denied.
