Hands-On: 2018 MacBook Air with Retina Display

Apple's new MacBook Air starts at $1,199 (£1,199, AU$1,849), which is $200 more than the old MacBook Air.

The company announced the new MacBook Air at an event held in Brooklyn, New York.

Maintaining its signature slim profile but with 17 percent less volume, the new MacBook Air is highlighted by its new display, featuring 50 percent smaller bezels, allowing for a reduced footprint while retaining the same screen size. There's also a Touch ID sensor for good measure!

As for tech specs, you get 2x Thunderbolt 3 ports, 8th generation dual-core CPU with the latest Intel graphics. MacBook Air also features SSDs up to 1.5TB in capacity, that is said to be up to 60 per cent faster than the previous generation and make launching apps and opening files feel snappier and more responsive. SD card is gone, much to my chagrin, but the 3.5mm headphone jack remains, and there are two USB-C / TB-3 ports on the left side.

It's a hefty price for the device, especially since you can get current MacBook Airs on Amazon for around £800-£900, and the super-slim MacBook is only £100 more than these new Airs. Pre-orders will be shipped, and the laptop will be available at retail, from 7 November.

Now for the bad news: There's no $999 option on this new MacBook Air.

KitGuru Says: Its nice to see that Apple hasn't forgotten about, or made a decision to axe the Mac Mini and MacBook Air. A FaceTime HD web cam sits in its proper place above the display for pleasant video-chatting experiences.

What is the MacBook Air?

Apple has designed a custom aluminum alloy which is being used for the first time in the new MacBook Air. The Retina display also has better color, and the screen stretches closer to the edges of the device. Announced earlier this morning at Apple's October event - the new air is looking more attractive than ever, and has a lot going on under the hood too.

The previous update to the MacBook Air, released in 2017, included 128 GB of storage in the 13-inch version and 256 GB in the 15-inch version (both configurable to 512GB SSD).

The "ultimate iPad" has 25% less volume, nearly 4 million pixels and comes in 11 inches and 12.9 inches. The new Macbook Air comes with audio controller, always on process to enable "Hey Siri", and latest generation keyboard. The new MacBook Air's trackpad is 20% larger than its predecessor, and it also features Force Touch. "Unlike any notebook that's come before or since, MacBook Air has become the most beloved notebook ever". We'll update the guide periodically as new information about the notebook is available.
