Novak Djokovic wins record fourth Shanghai Masters title

Majestic Djokovic marches on in Shanghai

The victor of the last two grand slams, Djokovic has been unstoppable in recent months and crushed Zverev 6-2 6-1 to set up a final meeting with either Roger Federer or Borna Coric.

"The game is working really well and ending a year as number one will definitely be the biggest achievement of this year".

Celebrating his 1,000 match in style, the 14-time Grand Slam victor was clinical as he lined up a potential title showdown on Sunday with reigning champion Roger Federer.

Coric, the 13th seed, was chasing only the third title of his career and defeated top seed Federer in the semi-finals to underline his rich promise.

Djokovic's win over Zverev and Federer's demise guaranteed Djokovic will move up from No. 3 to No. 2 in the world rankings on Monday, which has him swapping positions with Federer, but still trailing Rafael Nadal.

Shanghai becomes Djokovic's fourth major title of the season, adding to Wimbledon, the US Open and the win in Cincinnati.

Djokovic's data is obviously still better, at 87.8% and 30.0%, respectively (117.8% combined), and unsurprisingly he's the favourite to take the title.

But he made a slow start against Coric, ranked 19 in the world, getting broken in the first game.

"And where I was about four months ago and where I am today is quite an extreme opposite".

On Saturday, in Shanghai, Djokovic said he would meet Gerard Pique in order to reach a compromise and try to combine the ATP World Team Cup and the newly launched Davis Cup. 'It's great to have a superstar in football, you know, trying to do something different and innovative in our sport, ' said the Serb. "I think it was a really good week for me".

In contrast, Coric - who is into his first Masters 1000 final - was largely untroubled on his serve.

After falling 3-1 down, the German angrily smashed his racquet - earning a code violation - before throwing it into the crowd.

Coric, who had his right thigh wrapped throughout the match, saved three match points on his own serve in the ninth game of the second set.
