Saudi Arabia weighs blaming intelligence official for Khashoggi killing

Missing journalist Jamal Khashoggi's Turkish fiancee Hatice and her friends wait in front of the Saudi Arabian consulate in Istanbul

A Turkish newspaper reported October 18 that Turkish police will extend the search for missing Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi to a forest in Istanbul and a farm house in the neighboring province of Yalova.

Khashoggi, a prominent critic of Saudi policies and columnist for the Washington Post who was living in the United States, vanished after entering the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on October 2 to get marriage documents.

Turkish media claim authorities have audio that shows he was tortured and murdered in the building after a 15-man "hit squad" entered the country.

Pompeo said during his visit both the Saudi and Turkish governments reiterated their commitment to a full investigation into Khashoggi's disappearance.

He also said it is important to remember that Saudi Arabia is a long strategic partner of the United States throughout the process.

A senior government source says cabinet ministers, federal officials and embassy staff will skip next week's Future Investment Initiative in Riyadh, which is also called "Davos in the Desert".

"We have asked for it, if it exists", the president said. Saudi Arabia has "a healthy spare capacity to serve as a buffer against any emergency", he added.

He told reporters before boarding Air Force One to attend a campaign rally: "It certainly looks that way to me".

Pompeo and the Trump administration as a whole have been careful to avoid judgment on the Saudis, and emphasized the importance of the U.S. -Saudi relationship.

The White House referred questions to the State Department which denied Pompeo had heard the recording.

Turkish police gather outside the residence of the Saudi consul General Mohammed al-Otaibi to conduct a search after the disappearance and alleged slaying of Jamal Khashoggi in Istanbul.

Khashoggi vanished after entering the consulate for official documents ahead of his upcoming wedding to his Turkish fiancee.

Working with the European Union and other partners, the Dutch government would "look at ways worldwide concerns about Khashoggi could be addressed", Foreign Minister Stef Blok said.

"The conditions have not yet been met for me to go to Riyadh", Le Maire told French television's Public Senat.

A Turkish crime scene investigator seen with blood stains on his hazmat suit while finishing an investigation into the Saudi consul's official residence over Jamal Khashoggi's disappearance. A mounting pile of evidence suggests he was killed there.

In an interview with the New York Times, Trump based his acknowledgment that Khashoggi was dead on intelligence reports.
