Trudeau pledges compensation for dairy farmers hit by USMCA deal

The USMCA is the third free-trade agreement in which Canada has agreed to open access to its supply-managed sectors, this time including increased access for eggs, chicken and turkey.

The Trump administration had set a deadline of Sunday at midnight for Canada to sign on or risk being left out of the trade deal with the USA and Mexico.

Canada is one of the most trade-dependent countries in the world and Trump's talk of ripping up that deal and imposing a 25 percent tariff on the auto sector posed a serious economic threat. He says that while he's optimistic the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement will create opportunities, he's anxious about the impact on Ontario's agriculture sector.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says he has assured dairy farmers they will be compensated for their expected losses under the new United States-Mexico-Canada trade agreement. Tense talks that concluded shortly before the Sunday midnight deadline gave the United States new access to the Canadian dairy market, in addition to changes that could limit Canada's global dairy exports. The deal is likely to come into force by 2020, as it will have to be approved by Congress which will vote while it is in session next year. -Canada trade. Canada's tariffs on dairy imports can approach 300 percent.

"The most important gain from this agreement is retaining our access to the US market and Canadians understand that", Freeland said. Trump's advisers view the trade pact as a political victor in battleground states critical to the president's 2016 victory and home to tens of thousands of auto workers and manufacturers who could benefit from the changes.

The newly minted agreement is estimated to bring USA farmers a $70 million increase in exports to Canada's dairy market and greater access in the egg and poultry markets. Automakers are under pressure to build more cars where workers earn decent wages.

The president, never known for understatement, said the new deal would "transform North America back into a manufacturing powerhouse".

The new agreement gradually opens the Canadian market to more exported U.S. dairy products, including fluid milk, cream, butter, skim milk powder and cheese. So, from an Iowa farmer perspective, Secretary Naig and our entire department were really focused on making sure that we've got zero tariff barriers both in Mexico and in Canada.

"The clause achieves a key policy imperative for the United States; namely, shutting China's backdoor to North America through Canada and Mexico", Ujczo said.

But it was Kushner's close relationship with Telford that sources are crediting with getting the United States and Canada to this breakthrough. The new United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement indeed contains greater worker protections, a tradeoff that could mean higher costs.

After a year of often heated talks, a new trade agreement has been reached between Canada, the us and Mexico. "Japan is wanting to negotiate".

The new agreement would end the discriminatory pricing and restrict Canadian exports of dairy powders.

"This deadline was real", according to a senior US official.

The new deal will see Canada's duty-free amount go from $20 to $150, meaning Canadians shopping for U.S. goods online will not have to pay duty on purchases that are $150 or less.

The new deal covered trade between the three countries worth $1.2bn and was "truly historic", he said. "It sent a very strong signal to the rest of the world that you're either with us versus China, or you're against us", Guajardo said.
