Turkey asks permission to search Saudi consulate for missing journalist

Turkey believes journalist killed in Saudi consulate

Jamal Khashoggi, a prominent critic of the Riyadh regime, has not been seen since he entered Saudi Arabia's consulate in Istanbul last Tuesday and Turkish authorities claim he was killed inside the building.

The details will add to pressure on the Saudi government to explain who the 15 Saudis were and what they were doing during their brief trip to Istanbul.

Yasin Aktay, an official in Turkey's ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) who was close to the journalist, said Khashoggi had made an appointment in advance with the consulate and called to check the documents were ready.

Jamal Khashoggi, a long-standing critic of Saudi Arabia and for the a year ago a columnist in the Post, has been at the center of worldwide concern that he has been murdered after walking into the consulate in Turkey's largest city and vanishing.

The Washington Post said it would be a "monstrous and unfathomable act" if he had been killed. The consulate insists the writer left its premises, contradicting Turkish officials.

"Our country's values should be and must be a cornerstone of our foreign policy with foes and allies alike", he said.

The Post said "a person close to the investigation" shared the image with them, without elaborating. That's what I do on Washington Post. The consulate is Saudi sovereign territory. Security camera footage shows boxes being loaded into the van, which carried diplomatic number plates.

She says two plainclothes Turkish police officers have been following her around for protection and that authorities stopped by yesterday to interview her a second time and take some of Khashoggi's clothes and belongings for DNA sampling.

Flight records show two Saudi planes arrived at Istanbul's Ataturk airport on Tuesday and departed separately that same day, hours after Khashoggi was last seen.

The Saudis have offered no evidence that he did leave.

"The era of bin Salman is the era of surprises that are foreign to this country's history".

I assure you that the reports that suggest that Jamal Khashoggi went missing in the Consulate in Istanbul or that the Kingdom's authorities have detained him or killed him are absolutely false, and baseless.

Activists say the reports about Khashoggi are the latest political "bombshell" in a series of moves to crush dissent under the leadership of 33-year-old Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

As a contributor to the Post, Khashoggi has written extensively about Saudi Arabia, including criticising its war in Yemen, its recent diplomatic spat with Canada and its arrest of women's rights activists after the lifting of a ban on women driving. It has allowed reporters into the consulate to show Mr Khashoggi is not there. He claimed that Khashoggi had left the building not long after he entered earlier this week. "Don't you have cameras and other things?" Then why do you not prove this? Saudi Arabia is also unhappy about Ankara's growing proximity to the kingdom's Shiite rival, Iran.

Members of Congress, both Republican and Democrats, have also called for answers regarding Khashoggi's disappearance. Donald Trump commented on the disappearance in his press conference yesterday, saying "I do nor like it" and expressing hope that the issue will "sort itself out". Right now, nobody knows anything about it, but there's some pretty bad stories going around. "I do not like it". President Erdoğan of Turkey has left no stone unturned to expose Saudi Arabia for the "murder most foul" to assert Turkey's supremacy in the region.
