Manafort 'lied to Mueller and FBI AFTER plea deal agreement'

Paul Manafort

Paul Manafort, Donald Trump's one-time campaign manager, violated his plea agreement with federal prosecutors that avoided a second trial earlier this year, said prosecutors in a new court filing on November 26. It indicates that not only did Manafort speak extensively with the Justice Department prosecutors for their investigation, but they also believe they were able to verify or refute information he gave them.

Read the court filing here.

They said he "committed federal crimes by lying to the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Special Counsel's Office on a variety of subject matters, which constitute breaches of the agreement". The special counsel's office says it will provide more details at a later date.

Both sides asked Jackson to sentence Manafort without delay.

The filing says Manafort does not agree with prosecutors' assertion that he has lied.

It's rare for criminal defendants' cases to near their end in this manner. Mueller had delayed to see how well Manafort cooperated.

Manafort had been meeting with the special counsel's office since he pleaded guilty in September to conspiracy against the USA and conspiracy to obstruct justice.

Manafort, though he has not made public statements since his plea, was thought to be the star cooperator in the special counsel's ongoing probe. The former Trump campaign chairman has met with prosecutors at least nine times, amounting to hours of discussions about what he knows.

The breakdown in the plea deal means that Manafort will nearly certainly be hit with a harsher sentence - both for the crimes he pleaded guilty to in Washington and for his conviction in August in a separate case in Virginia on bank and tax fraud.

The charges were connected to his work in Ukraine for a Kremlin-connected politician.

Manafort admitted to the two conspiracy counts in Washington in September after a jury convicted him in Virginia earlier of tax and bank fraud.

For more than a year now, Manafort has been at the heart of several unresolved threads of the Mueller investigation. If there was collusion between the Trump campaign and Russian operatives (a hypothesis without any evidence in support thus far), Manafort would either have to have been part of it or known of it. "Paul Manafort will take every opportunity to dispute that and have his lawyers produce evidence that he did not lie and that he was showing his recollection to the best of his ability".

Manafort has been held in a Virginia jail since June, after he and Kilimnik were accused of attempting to tamper with possible witnesses before his trial.
