Nancy Pelosi Confident She Has Votes For Speaker As Opponents Go Public

Pelosi allies were quick to jump on the letter Monday as proof that Pelosi will overcome the challenges.

Sixteen Democrats have signed a letter indicating their pledge to oppose Pelosi, D-Calif., both in an internal caucus election and a January 3 floor vote. It's also possible ― as one Democratic staffer involved in the efforts to dethrone Pelosi theorized ― that Fudge wants to look more deferential as she prepares for a speaker run herself.

On the one hand, Pelosi's supporters say now more than ever the party needs the California Democrat's leadership as a skilled strategist and tireless fundraiser to confront President Donald Trump and Senate Republicans in Congress.

In this last election, they said, "Our majority came on the backs of candidates who said that they would support new leadership because voters in hard-won districts, and across the country, want to see real change in Washington".

"We are thankful to Leader Pelosi for her years of service to our Country and to our Caucus", they wrote.

Fudge, a former chair of the Congressional Black Caucus, sat down for an interview with the Washington Post last Thursday, where she said she's been "overwhelmed" by all the support from some of her Democratic colleagues.

Those opposing Pelosi's candidacy say that this type of whip operation is exactly why they need new leadership, arguing that the new members who campaigned against her are now finding themselves pressured to cast a vote that could ultimately cost them reelection.

Fourteen men and two women signed a letter saying they believed "the time has come for new leadership in our caucus".

None of the three other House Democrats from OR signed the letter. It also includes Ben McAdams, who not only hasn't won, but is trailing.

While the letter technically means she doesn't have the votes at the moment, there are legislative mechanisms to lower the actual threshold of votes she would need, like members voting "present".

Accordingly, a draft proposal from Democrats on the House Rules Committee proposes an "independent diversity office" tasked with ensuring the House employs a "diverse workforce with qualified candidates that is reflective of our Members and the districts they represent", because "public servants working for the People's House should reflect the faces of America". "She deserves this victory, she earned it", he said.

"Right now, as far as I understand, she's the only person running, so that makes for a very easy decision", Scanlon told reporters as the incoming legislators began orientation last week. That's a similar tack to the one taken two years ago by Fudge's ally, Ohio Rep. Tim Ryan, who challenged Pelosi during internal caucus elections.
