NZ bt Pakistan by 4 runs in Test thriller

Ajaz Patel congratulated by team-mates

Spinner Ajaz Patel took five wickets on his Test debut as New Zealand triumphed by four runs after an astonishing Pakistan batting collapse in the first Test in Abu Dhabi.

"When they did review it [the batsman was given out lbw] I think I was on my knees just steering up at the screen hoping that it would fall the right way and when it did it was an unbelievable feeling, yeh a great rush".

The five-day format has been under threat from the more vibrant Twenty20 and one-day internationals and the mushrooming of the leagues around the world.

Wagner, who bowled an unchanged 13-over spell with lot of energy, also had Yasir Shah caught in the slips as Pakistan lost five wickets for 17 runs after lunch.

New Zealand's lurch from 220-4 to 249 all out left a victory target of 176 for Pakistan, whose openers Imam-ul-Haq (25 not out) and Mohammad Hafeez (8 not out) took them to 37 without loss at the end of day three.

But cricket's has its own unpredictability as we have experienced over the years when a possible victory is snatched from the jaws of defeat and that goes for both the teams fighting to take the upper hand.

"We saw the nature of how wickets fell in clumps", Williamson said.

The second Test will be played in Dubai from November 24-28 before the teams return to Abu Dhabi for the final Test from December 3-7.

"Yes, without a doubt".

They continued to impress till New Zealand tallied a 10-run lead over the hosts until Williamson's off-stump was clipped by what was the delivery of the match from Yasir Shah. The best in recent memory.

"It's very disappointing to lose it", Pakistan captain Sarfraz Ahmed said. Nobody played a long innings.

Ireland, to say the least, have been found out on the biggest stage.

"I'm not sure why it was challenging to start as a batsman, and we knew if you're able to keep the pressure on, who knows what might happen?"

New Zealand lead in the three-match series 1-0.

The second Test begins in Dubai on Saturday.
