One dead, another injured after rush hour stabbing attack in Melbourne

Victoria Police on Friday confirmed they were treating the attack which occurred just before 4:30pm in Melbourne's busy Bourke Street as a terror-related incident.

Victoria Police Superintendent David Clayton said when police arrived at the scene they were confronted by a man brandishing a knife and threatening them.

Police said the man got out of a vehicle, which then caught fire, and attacked three bystanders with a knife before being shot by police.

Mr Ashton said police were "doing security reassessments of these events in light of what's occurred", but there was "no ongoing threat we're now aware of in relation to people surrounding this individual".

"He's known to police mainly in respect to relatives he has that are certainly persons of interest to us".

"The investigation is ongoing and we are keeping an open mind", he says.

THE man who went on a stabbing attack in Melbourne's Bourke St is reportedly dead after being shot by police. One of the injured was reportedly in suspected critical condition with a neck injury, while another had sustained a head injury.

Witnesses reported a loud explosion from the vehicle, which burst into flames before a man emerged and began attacking people with a knife in the street, police said.

"Equally, those strangers, people who were by-standers who knew nobody involved, who stepped in without a moment's hesitation, to render support and assistance to the fearless members of the Victoria Police, they too are people whose qualities make all of us proud as well". He was taken to hospital under police guard in a critical condition, and according to the Herald Sun, has since died.

One of the stabbing victims died at the scene while two are in hospital. A bomb squad rendered them safe without any exploding.

The news report above came before police acknowledged that the man was already on the radar of Australian intelligence.

State Premier Daniel Andrews described the attack as "evil" but said the city would not be bowed.

"It's the center of Melbourne, where a lot of the transportation changes over ... it's probably the busiest part of Melbourne and late on a Friday", said Meegan May who witnessed part incident from a nearby tram.

The incident occurred on the same street as a deadly vehicle attack in January 2017 that left six people dead and at least 30 others wounded.

In the past, the Islamic State has claimed responsibility for some "lone wolf" attacks in which the assailant was later found to have no allegiance to the group.
