President Trump Threatens to Pull Federal Funding Over Deadly California Wildfires

Massive plumes of smoke billow Friday over the state

The Camp Fire in California has killed at least nine people and torn up more than 6,700 structures, becoming the most destructive wildfire to property in state history, officials said Saturday. The Woolsey Fire had grown to more than 35,000 acres and state officials said about 250,000 people were forced to evacuate. It killed eight people in July and August and burned about 1,100 homes. Many cities in the greater Los Angeles area have been evacuated, including Calabasas, Topanga Canyon, and Malibu.

"I am thinking so deeply for everyone who is suffering today from these abominable fires and grieving the loss of their homes or loved ones", Lady Gaga said in a tweet.

Near Oak Park, the town of Thousand Oaks - still reeling from a mass shooting on Wednesday night - has also been threatened by the encroaching blaze.

The fire in the picture is highlighted, and beneath that smoke the flames are encroaching on the northern California community of Paradise, where it's estimated that up to 90% of homes have been destroyed. Fallon said he shook his head as the fire roared closer.

Officials took advantage of temporarily calm conditions to assess damage from the blaze that has burned 109 square miles (282 square kilometers) north and west of downtown Los Angeles. Acting Governor Gavin Newsom called a state of emergency in Butte County.

Nine bodies have been found in the town of Paradise, dozens of people are still missing. Ventura County Fire Chief Mark Lorenzen said some firefighters were "literally pulling people out of burning homes".

Concerned friends and family posted anxious messages on Twitter and other sites, saying they were looking for loved ones, particularly seniors who lived at retirement homes or alone.

"Pretty much the community of Paradise is destroyed".

A group of Cal Fire firefighters monitor ambers from a toppled wall while battling the Camp Fire in Paradise on Friday. Helicopters collect water from lakes and ponds to douse wildfires and have plenty at hand, they said.

Los Angeles County fire chief Daryl Osby said thousands of firefighters were working in the toughest, most extreme conditions they had ever seen.

In Malibu, mandatory evacuations were ordered for the entire city of about 12,000 people that's known for its celebrity beachside homes.

Oscar-winning director Guillermo Del Toro also confirmed he had been evacuated and feared for his home and his extensive movie memorabilia collection, while former EastEnders star Patsy Palmer, who now lives near Los Angeles, was also forced to leave her home. Two people were found dead in a wildfire in Southern California, bringing the total number of fatalities for the state to 25.

"There is no reason for these massive, deadly and costly forest fires in California except that forest management is so poor", Trump said in a tweet.

With the devastation and loss of life in the Northern California fire, "it's evident from that situation statewide that we're in climate change and it's going to be here for the foreseeable future", he said.

"Mr. President, with all due respect, you are wrong".
