Trump Tells Fox’s Chris Wallace Conduct ‘Rules’ Coming for Press

Media groups including Fox News joined CNN's legal battle Wednesday to restore Acosta's White House pass as the

In a victory for the cable network and for press access generally, Judge Timothy J. Kelly granted CNN's motion for a temporary restraining order that will prevent the administration from keeping Acosta off the White House grounds. "Our honest thanks to all who have supported not just CNN, but a free, strong and independent American press".

In a ruling, the judge zeroed in on the Fifth Amendment "due process" protections that were raised in a 1977 legal battle in which a reporter was denied White House press access.

CNN and other media groups, including Trumfavouritete Fox News, backed the lawsuit, which claimed that revoking Acosta's pass violated constitutional guarantees of a free press. Trump called Acosta a "rude, awful person", and Press Secretary Sarah Sanders said the correspondent's access had been revoked because he put his hands on the female aide.

In court, U.S. government lawyers said there was no First Amendment right of access to the White House and that Acosta was penalised for acting rudely at the conference and not for his criticisms of the President. Later, the White House pulled his hard press credentials.

On Friday, Sanders said the White House "will also further develop rules and processes to ensure fair and orderly press conferences in the future". Less than a week later, a Trump-appointed judge ordered his access restored, at least for the time being.

Trump said he wants "total freedom of the press", but added "you have to act with respect".

Acosta attempted to ask another question about special counsel Robert Mueller's Russian Federation investigation and initially declined to give up a hand-held microphone to a White House intern.

Lindsay Walters may not be a well-known public figure, but she would certainly have been recognized in a room full of White House reporters. Many people can be prohibited from entering the White House without their freedom of speech becoming infringed. I think you were treated very unfairly, both of you.

CNN reporter Jim Acosta speaks with reporters outside of the US District courthouse. The administration's argument was such a stupid and obvious violation of the First Amendment, I'm not inclined to put this in the category of "Trump judges standing up to Donald Trump". The reporter refused to surrender a microphone to a White House aide who tried to take it away. In response to the court, we will temporarily reinstate the reporter's hard pass.

"Judge Kelly's absurd ruling cites a 1977 precedent that doesn't relate to disruptive conduct in briefings or the WH itself", Dobbs wrote.

Though the White House provided written reasons for revoking Acosta's pass after the fact, Kelly ruled that "these belated efforts were hardly sufficient to satisfy due process". His situation did not change much this week, except that his suspicions of a secret indictment were collaborated an Assistant US Attorney, in an apparent slip of the pen.

"I was confident ... that our rights would be protected to continue to cover our government and hold our leaders accountable", he said.
