Women, Muslims, Latinos & LGBT people win in US Midterm Elections

Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib

Abbas and his top aides have shunned the United State's role as mediator in the peace process following Trump's decision to move the embassy to Jerusalem and formally recognize the city as Israel's capital.

"The first woman of color to represent our state in Congress, the first woman to wear a hijab, the first refugee ever elected to Congress and one of the first Muslim women elected to Congress". She will succeed the first Muslim congressman, Keith Ellison, who vacated the seat to run for Minnesota's Attorney General.

Ilhan Omar, a 36-year-old Somali refugee, who immigrated to the United States as a teenager, beat Republican Jennifer Zielinski to take Ellison's seat.

Bassam Tlaib, the candidate's uncle, said she had "stood against Trump" at a time when "even our Arab leaders are unwilling to face (him)".

Omar's family fled Somalia in 1991 due to civil war. She eventually settled in Minneapolis. She campaigned in favor of single-payer health care, tighter gun control and more inclusive immigration policies.

The legislature consists of two chambers: the House of Representatives (which Omar has been elected to) and the Senate.

Omar was elected in Minnesota's 5th district, a heavily Democratic area that includes Minneapolis and surrounding areas. She used that record of taking on corporate interests and defending local priorities as part of her campaign for election as a congressional representative. She is also the first Somali American to win election to national office, according to CNN.

"We need real people who are talking about our issues and know what it feels like", Haaland told AFP in an interview ahead of the elections, in which she ran in New Mexico's 1st congressional district seat. "Yes, we marched outside the Capitol, but now we get to march into the Capitol", she wrote on Twitter this morning.

There was no Republican on the ballot in the overwhelmingly Democratic district.
