YouTube introduces free, ad-supported movie streams

The Terminator

Until now, users were able to purchase movies and TV shows.

The library appears to available only in the United States for now, and is different from the YouTube original content films that the streaming website includes with a YouTube Premium subscription, previously named YouTube Red. YouTube's director of product management, Rohit Dhawan, says that eventually there could be a way for advertisers to pay to sponsor movies, but it's unclear exactly how that will work at this time.

AdAge confirmed that the Google video service quietly started adding free, ad-supported movies in October.

YouTube has just rolled out dozens of free-to-watch full-length feature films on its platform.

Add to that the data Google has on individual consumers and you can see the potential for not only getting us to watch adverts during a movie, but for those ads to be targeted at individual viewers.

It's also a way, according to Ad Age, for YouTube to ensure that the ads it does run appear alongside premium-level content, and not dubious videos that might drive advertisers away. You can find the full list here. Many of them are from the MGM library, which includes the original Terminator, the Rocky movies, Legally Blonde, Steve Martin's Pink Panther 2 and Four Weddings And a Funeral. It also comes after Roku introduced its own free, ad-supported movie selection called The Roku Channel which is available on the web. "Can we do ad-supported movies, free to the user?"
