1st Test: Poor batting leave India struggling

India vs Australia Test series

Australia's batsman Travis Head plays a shot as Indian wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant (L) looks on during day two of the first Test cricket match at the Adelaide Oval on 7 December 2018. For Australia, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, Pat Cummins and Nathon Lyon picked two wickets apiece.

"It's nice to do a good job for the team".

"We've bowled a fuller length and some bouncers to get them back in the crease.it is really encouraging that they are swinging the ball". The Adelaide Oval has been his most successful ground and four years ago against India he filled his boots with a 12 wicket haul.

I emphasise slowly. The 2.17 run rate that they crawled along at yesterday has drawn plenty of attention; no Australian team has batted at a slower clip in the first innings of a Test in this country since 1990.

"You sense they're smelling blood", Langer was quoted as saying by SEN's Whateley. "It was quite hot, we are used to it in India but still..."

But he was undone by a drifting ball from Ashwin, getting an edge to Murali Vijay at silly mid-off and ending a 45-run partnership with a slimmed-down Usman Khawaja who was back after knee surgery.

Equally, Handscomb was able to show his proficiency against spin, handling Ashwin with rather more certainty than the bevy of left-handers in the Australian top six.

"I was little surprised by that selection ... it's not what I thought they'd do", Warne said.

India's strike spinner for the first Test will be 32-year-old Ravichandran Ashwin.

"When you shuffle from leg stump to leg stump, you know the placement of the stump, but when a tall batsman like him shuffles towards off stump off his backfoot then the front foot will go a lot outside the off stump and then you play the shot outside the off stump you are liable to get out at slip. Gaining the respect of our country is as high a priority as is winning", the wicketkeeper-batsman said at the pre-match press conference.

"I see it as neck and neck as far as the game goes right now".

"At the same time I'm trying to keep it as simple as I can". Australian captain is caught behind.

Cummins joined Head and they began to find gaps in the field as India exhausted, putting on a 50-run stand before Cummins lbw to Bumrah for 10 late in the day. The style of play in Australia compared to the UAE is completely different...

"We're not going to be tentative anyone, we just have to bat our game". The batting great also stressed the importance of a patient approach in Test cricket, especially when the ball is swinging around for at least the first couple of hours.

"We've obviously got a lot of confidence in Nathan Lyon bowling a lot of overs if we need him to". There is a bit of hold in the wicket but it is not something that is considerable or vicious or anything like that.

"You can only put the bowlers under pressure if they give you the opportunity to put them under pressure", he said.

Ashwin agreed that the Test match for there for the taking.

At stumps, Australia were 191/7 in 88 overs with Ashwin being their primary tormentor, securing figures of 3/50 in 33 overs.

"At times, I have had a bad phase playing overseas but I still feel very confident about playing in different conditions".
