Singh, who'd been with the department since 2011, lived in Modesto with his wife Anamika, and their infant son.

The Stanislaus County Sheriff Department has set up a memorial fund for the Singh family where readers can donate. If he had been reported, Christianson said, Singh would still be alive. Cpl. Within just a couple of minutes, Singh got back on the radio to report that shots had been fired and he was hit.

Newman Calif., police officer Ronil Singh is pictured in a photo on display at a press conference about the hunt for his killer, December 27, 2018.

Christianson called for stricter laws at a news conference Friday as Singh's brother wept beside him.

His spokesman said on Friday that if the suspect was a known gang member, police could have provided that information to federal authorities.

"This is new for our department", Richardson said.

At the press conference, Christianson introduced Singh's tearful brother Reggie Singh, who expressed gratitude to law enforcement for dedicating themselves to finding his older brother's killer.

The suspect accused of killing Singh has been identified as 32-year-old Guastavo Perez Arriaga.

Manhunt intensifies for illegal alien accused of killing Calif. police officer

A suspect identified from convenience store video before the killing, remains at large and is considered armed and unsafe.

Kern County Sheriff Donny Youngblood said two men and a woman were arrested at the same home where Arriaga was found for aiding and abetting the suspect.

He said they were trying to protect Arriaga, who was trying to go to Mexico.

"Build the Wall!" he wrote as the partial government shutdown, precipitated by an unwillingness of Republicans and Democrats to compromise on a spending bill to include the president's demand for $5 billion to fund a border wall.

Christianson explained that Arriaga illegally crossed the border into Arizona "some time ago".

Gustavo Perez Arriaga, an illegal alien living in California, was arrested on Friday after he allegedly shot and killed Singh - a legal immigrant from Fiji - during a routine traffic stop on December 26. The 33-year-old had gang affiliations and multiple Facebook pages with different names, Christianson said. They both face a charge of accessory after the fact to a felony. "Under SB 54 in California, based on two arrests for DUI and some other active warrants that this criminal has out there, law enforcement would have been prevented, prohibited from sharing any information with ICE about this criminal gang member".

The Newman Police Department has announced plans are underway to hold Corporal Singh's funeral on 5th January. He joined the Merced County sheriff's office as a reserve officer and worked as an animal control officer in Turlock before being hired in Newman.
